Question

How to make an R.C. airboat?

Hello all, I have been fly r.c. planes for some time now. I have rectally become interested airboates. I have some old r.c. plane electric motors laying around and would not mind trying to construct one of these. if anyone can tell me any tips or anything it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

First, Foam or Balsa? I built mine from 1in pink foam (2 pieces) cut and sanded to shape. Made my fan cage from coat hangers, motor support is lite ply. Motor 25 size outrunner, 3s lipo.

That is amazing nice job building that. I want to make one out of foam just like the one you built. how did you do it. Also how do you get everything water proof? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid ques. but I am an airplane guy, never built any boats. Also I will be running airplane equipment in it will that be a problem? do you have some close up pics.?

I'll get some close-ups tonight and post them tomorrow. I'm an airplane, heli, boat, truck kinda guy! As for waterproofing, corrosiveX is (I think) that I had to use. It's all airplane parts in her. If you don't had 1in pink foam you can use a foam boogie board. I'll get pics of the fan cage (that's the most complicated part to make). What size motor-prop-esc-battery do you plan on using? I have not decided on electronics, maybe my old E-flight park 480, as for batteries I was thing 2200mah. 3-cell. My radio is a spectrum DX-7, and the receiver I will use will be an AR6100. It may take me a while to get something going, but I got all winter to do it. And I wont find any liquid water pretty soon till spring. As for servoes I have 4-HS 65hb servos laying around collecting dust.

Look up CRD airboats, you won't be disappointed. they come out of Florida. I have one and a few more besides. I've built a few and found that fairly small inrunner motor that have rpm in the 24,000 rpm on lipos like 2s in the 4000 mah should fit the bill. The CRD's take on 2s 2200 mah lipo.

My BL motor about the same size, and I used 2200mah 3s, 11x4.7 prop. Video wasn't but about 1/2 throttle. only need one servo unless you don't want to connect the rudders mechanically. Mine is 1ft by 2ft .

Thanks for the pics. They will be helpful With my own design. Is the cage over the prop really necessary, or is it just for looks?

Helps protect young hands (my son) also helps protect prop from brush and stuff, but not really needed. Also it's the attachment point for my rudders.

I have also looked into the Steven's aeromodel air-boat, but after seeing the price tag for the kit $55 I decided I could probably scatchbuild something for less money. Besides you know what they say, if you want something done right you got to do it yourself.

Yup Yup! Study real ones, rc ones, and think about how you want it. That's how I did it. Also worked for my home-made push tug. Time-thought-and ingenuity....

One more question, where are you putting your battery and other electronics at?

I put mine in a Tupperware container, and covered it with a wood box.
