Yippee!

The Snipe (twisty wing awesomeness)

Four years ago I bought the Snipe from NES....its finally almost ready to fly.

Some notes on the build.

Made my own tails with a kevlar hinge..which worked pretty well. I learned sanding into kevlar is a pain to fix.

1/4 Wing rod looks a bit under engineered for this plane.

Weight right now without battery, receiver, balanced is 27oz. ( I hope to hit around 35oz once complete)

For the vtail setup the plane came with a cable kit. So off I went trying to install the cable...3 hours of pushing blue foam down the fuse in order to secure the cable for effective movement did nothing but frustrate me to the point of drinking. (THE HARD STUFF)

Scrap that..I got a wire instead all soldered up..Things were better but the servo I was using was struggling to push and pull...centering was awful.

Scrap that..Got a piece of carbon rod that is directly connected to the servo and vtail linkage..no sleeve to slide through...no foam in tail. Its strong, centers beautifully and fits without rubbing up to the actuator hardware.

This is my first wingeron and I'm dying to maiden it. Paint job was fun..I was trying to get away from red. At 35oz with the 72 inch wing span she should float nice in light air. I'm waiting for pay day to buy a optima 7 receiver...and then I'm off into the wild blue yonder!

Very nice. I'm always a bit afraid when the plane is so nice looking. It only looks like that once and never again after it's maiden flight.

I have a NES Sparrow (foamcore) I built over 10 years ago. I'm pretty sure I flew it at least once, and am working on getting the nads to toss it again.

I share the fear with you. Every time I throw a plane off a cliff I figure there is a chance its not coming back. A Sparrow that only flew once in 10 years sounds much sadder than a Sparrow that got beat up and died over the course of 10 years. Go fly it before something happens to you!

That's a beauty! Hope I get the chance to see it fly soon. Nice job on the paint scheme.

Does it have the SD-7003 airfoil still? Looks great and remember when Jerry Bridgman used to race with us at Torrey Pines with his . Pretty Sweet. Good luck on the Maiden. Do it at torrey so it has a chance to look like the picture when you go home.

NES website says it uses a Quabeck 1.5/9 airfoil. Sounds french to me..I don't know.

Not a member of Torrey but I think I've talked myself into joining come January 1st. Looking forward to getting a few shoots of it flying there.

Looks like a hollow molded Shrike on steriods

What is the fuselage length?

This picture should give you some scale on the size. Shredder in the back there is still king.

Fuse length is 38.5 inches

Hmmm...dave's on saturday huh.

Maiden

Successful Maiden today..setup needs adjustment.

Flew the red rotor first....effin rocket ship!!! Huge pumps...vertical 720 rolls.20 second loops..fun fun stuff. Does not fly invert without full down..so no negative loops. A bit of wing flutter at high high speed..not sure what can be done about it. A fun plane that really gives on lookers the wow factor.

Decide to go home and grab the Snipe..when I got back to the hill it was not blowing very hard..but I though good enough.

Threw it out....and it flew straight and true...but either I'm pulling to much elevator or the cg is to rear. On turns it would want to tips stall.(Badly!) I actually can almost guarantee its to much elevator. My first composite plane was the fredy and I remember the same behavior until I dialed back the throws.

Very careful and small stick work had it go 10 or 15 passes before I wanted to land. Its fast and once dialed in I can tell it will be awesome.

I hope tomorrow SD gets some wind!!!

Flew the Aurora 9 all day...starting to like the radio quite a bit.
