Kewl! Good setup - it works, that's for darn sure!
[Oh and, thanx for the 'couple thousand words' *heh*] With my one good cam for that purpose I might have 'juice' problems as, its sensors have to be operated by holding down shutter button a few secs while it reads light & adjusts exposure, auto-focuses, & finally trips. Thinking all that time with servo arm in 'stalled' condition would likely play hob on the battery life. I was looking this morning at videos from a fella had a keyfob cam silicon'd onto a servo'd pan & tilt head so he could 'look around'. I'm thinking that might be the next area I explore - something like that. |

Headless: Sorry about your losses! That's a major bummer, but it sure is fortunate you caught it in time to put it out. I'm going to make a charging box now... Sheesh!
Everybody: I fixed the CG, and now it flies wonderfully. I did another flight near sunset (see video). This time it was even more windy, but not as gusty. It was fun to try and "stop" in mid air. Too much flaps and the ailerons lose effectiveness (as expected due to reduced airspeed). I decided I needed full span ailerons (and flaps?), so I picked up a used JR X378 computer radio on eBay. Now I'm working through the intricacies of programming it, soon I'll have yet another windy video. Hopefully it'll be even more controllable in wind with full span ailerons. Here's the video:

*hopper - I went deep into the bowels of the setup on the Sony digital camera. Here's what I did: Turn off power saving (don't want it shutting off if you haven't taken a picture after 2 minutes). Set it for landscape mode (it focuses on infinity, and doesn't auto-focus). Flash off I use the shotgun approach to aerial photography - shoot literally hundreds of pictures, in hopes that you get 10-20 good ones. I can't imagine doing this with a film camera, but in digital land, multiple shots are free! Here are a couple pictures of the camera mount - it's a Pentax Optio on a PZ Radian - hope this isn't too OT. -- Greg |

No doubts - it def sux. It doesn't worry me....it just does. ¯\_(?)_/¯ I'm happy just grabbing frames from a (nother) vidi-cam. Here's a couple samples of what I'm getting. Not as sharp as yours, but they'll do. |

Is this model made by Lanyu? I've seen others rant against the way their wings are fixed to the fuselage - with four screws. I have two Lanyu electric gliders and I've almost have had enough with those dang four screws. Then again I've had two big nose dive crashes and the wings got ripped out on the last crash.

You've got your Phoenix dialed in nicely. I love the POV on that video.... I assume it is a keyfob cam...how are you securing it to the tail (and where). I've been adding lead to my tail for balancing CoG... but a camera would be far better !!! Toppers |

What camera are you using for your aerial vids? Nice flying spot, where is it? Andy |

motor cooling
i was wondering has anyone tried to drill a hole just in front of the canopy on the top and on the inside put some thing to direct the air flow on to the motor?

This evening, on the last flight of the evening, I had climbed WAY up there, and I heard a POP! noise, and the motor shut off. Uh-oh, what in the world was that? I had a nice, uneventful flight and landing. Upon inspection, one of the 3..5mm gold plated connectors had exploded! There was a large black mark on the inside of the fuselage where the connector was.
The motor is a 3542, 1000kV. The speed controller is a 40A. Running 3S, 2450mA battery. I guess that's just too much power for those connectors. But, it might have been the soldering job they did. Anyone else seen this type of anomoly? -- Greg |

Venus: I was set up for but we were clouded out. (I'm a member of IOTA, besides the primary interest.) But I caught the 'mate' transit of 4 years ago, so that was my once-in-a-lifetime'r. |

BTW guys....the Lanyu deal (replacement wings) I think has completely fallen thru. My 'inside contact' (a name most of you know I'm pretty sure) is apparently now 'on the outs' with them -- he opened a competing line (long story), so that avenue I'm afraid is now completely closed. I'm gonna write Lanyu & see if I can just buy direct, but when all's done I've got a feeling I can buy a whole plane in the USA whse cheaper than wings + freight (+risk) from China. |

Jeez Greg - that's sure a wow-zer! To've heard it from WAY up either it was very quiet surrounds or quite violent....and the final pic looks like it affirms that.
To 1st answer your question - nope, haven't seen that exactly, but have seen electrical blowouts so....relativity proportional. My educated guess is that there was something slightly amiss in the electrical joint itself. Likely internal, unless you can find a scorch-mark on the other wires or something else carrying current immediately adjacent. Any idea what happened to the insulation around the barrel of that yellow wire? Oh and....you said WAY up there. Continuous run, or had you got up there in stages? (with rests) |
