Not exactly sure what you are asking, but in general you want more teeth to get a better mesh.

But given the size of the motor the typical pinions are bordering on too small to properly mesh. 15 tooth is the generally accepted minimum number of teeth for any pinion,
but usually a 450 will use 11 or 12 to properly match the torque of the motor to the load.

Changing the Kv will not change the torque capability of the motor, only the current that it will take to produce that torque.

The teeth on a 15T pinion look soo much smaller than those of a 10T/11T pinion, it didn't seem like the higher pinions are a better fit at all.

I'm trying to find the pinion that best fills the space between teeth on the main gear. I know the motor mount has slide holes for fine adjustment, I just wanted to see which commonly avail pinion fits best.

The teeth should be the same height from root to tip.

Are your sure your 15 tooth is the correct pitch? Should be 0.5 module

Here is a set of pinions from 11 to 13 for example, and the teeth are all pretty much the same

you can get away with a bigger pinion if you run a governor on your ESC. I feel the 11T pinions wear out quickly. I got a set of steel 12T pinions and have not looked back since. I might get a 13T soon for a little more overhead on my governor power range.

Most all the pinions available for the 450 size motors all have the same pitch, the same number of teeth per inch? be it a 10 or 14 tooth if that is in your question. I have heard the slant gears mesh better and run smoother haven't treid them yet but have a set coming to try.

Yes that was my question. Thank you for rewording it properly LoL. I must have gotten a 15t with a different pitch, the teeth were shorter than my 12/13t & it fit the shaft but had horrible mesh issues. The main gear teeth filled the pinion gaps, but the pinion teeth couldn't fill the main gear gaps.

So with that strait, my next question is: To obtain steady headspeed is it better to go higher kv + lower pinion or lower kv with higher pinion?

My own thought is that higher pinion will bog a motor down more on heavy pitch loads. Am I right?

Sounds like that pinion was machined badly. With the head speed it more depends on your helicopter setup, motor, and flying style. You can achieve the same head speed with different kv motors, If you are bogging going down one tooth is where I would start. the smaller the pinion the more torque and less top end speed. think of it as shifting down a gear if your car bogs it's easier to start off in first than second gear.

That sounds right. I have a turnigy 2836 3700kv, I want to set my next 450 up for normal flight & MAYBE light aerobatics.

Unfortunately a 20t on my motor would cause a good solid meltdown @ over 125amp draw LoL.

I think if you need to run a 20t pinion on a 450 you're using the wrong battery pack!

Has anyone else noticed that with a higher headspeed these things are really stable

I went from a 4400kv motor to a 3800kv and what a difference . I am buying more of the 4400kv motors
