Peter Rake IPS Sopwith Pup build!


I was fortunate enough to be offered another beta build for Peter, and after lots of delays getting started I've finally begun.
This one is a 25.5" span Sopwith Pup for GWS IPS DX-A power.

I thought I'd start by cutting the 40 odd ribs. I decided to sand and slot them as a block rather than while cutting to save time.

Heres the result of a few hours of relaxed cutting!

Hi Trizza,

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one progresses and especially how she flies. Peter's gonna love me for this....( ), how much dihedral are you building into the wings?

Also, how about a rundown of the spec? Which gear ratio and prop are you intending to use?

I'm going to build in the amount the plans call for - 5/8" on each tip. The last beta build I did for him (Morane Saulnier type L) doesn't have much dihedral either but I really like the way she flies so I'm confident this one will be the same.

Specs -
25.5" span
18" long
250 sq in area (approx)
Can't remember the called for AUW but its probably 8oz or less.

I'll be using the A ratio box, with a repitched 8*4.3 prop up front. First flights will be on 6*280 NiMhs, but the majority of my flying will be on 2s 700 etec lithium polymers.

I'll probably cover with white tissue and dope and then spray with either humbrol enamels or colour matched acrylics.

I'm really looking forwards to moving along with the build and getting this puppy (no pun intended ) in the air!

Both wings pretty much done now. Inner ribs and dowels need to be done, and plenty of sanding and planing.

And the cowl, in need of a bit more sanding. Right now it looks more like the Monosoupape rather than the Le Rhone. I much prefer the Le Rhone cowling so I'm going to do my best to make it look like that. I built this a couple of months ago when I had a short break from university.

trizza,

I've found with my models that the IPS drive S-1 is a perfect ratio with 8" props, the 8x6 flies my 6.8 oz. Fokker B-1 DS on 6 300 nimh cells just fine. Any heavier than 7.5 to 8 oz. makes for a slow climb though with just 6 cells.

Just how soon the plan appears depends on Trizza and how quickly he builds and photographs her. From the look of it, not too long.

Just got back today from being out of town for a funeral. I'm sick at the moment so I guess I'll just have to use my usual remedy - build build build!

Loooeee - I must try one of those low ratio boxes. My only carbon brushed A just gave up on me the other day after 2 years, the model that it was flying now uses the metal brushed A from my Morane so I may get an S1 or S2 for these little scale beauties.

That was one evening's worth. Tonight I hope to get the tail all done and get a good start on the fuselage. I'll get some good quality shots with my camera (flash on) and post them on my site or on the e-zone gallery for you to inspect. If they're not good enough I'll either try to get a friend of mine to take higher quality shots or go ye olde film route.
