Whats your favorite way to loose altitude?


Currently (as in today) my favorite way to loose altitude is to go inverted and pull an inside loop and repeat. I guess any way you come down without destroying your plane is great but some are just more FUN!

It depends on what I plan to do next. If it's an emergency landing (i.e., there's a full-scale coming into our shared field) and I need to land RIGHT NOW, I'd rather spin down to pattern altitude, then land. Spinning keeps the plane from picking up too much momentum, which I'd have to bleed off before landing.

If it isn't a an emergency, I may split-s, cut power and slip, or just cut power and spiral down. The first preserves momentum, so if I want to go back up, have speed for a maneuver, or just go fast, it's the one I choose.

Xpress, it's fun to be able to rely on those carbon spars

I'd have to say that if I want to drop altitude FAST I like to point the nose down and do vertical rolls with or without throttle. This keeps the plane headed straight down toward a fixed point on the ground.

If I'm trying to lose altitude and change direction I roll inverted, point the nose down ... and let 'er drop... and then pull up. Very effective.

Depends, am I doing it for fun or because I'm deadstick? Cut throttle and do a couple S turns usually. Cross controlling works ok too if I'm way out high though.

If I am flying something that will take lots of speed I do a split-S then point it straight at me in a screaming dive. This is even more impressive with a nitro plane as you can really hear the engine winding up – the Doppler effect makes it sound even faster as it accelerates towards me.

Well, you CAN go into negative altitudes but you have to do a REALLY hard dive to accomplish it.

If you had seen some of my crashes, a regular surface crash-landing would still look like it had plenty of altitude

Depends on where your 0 feet altitude is. If you're on the slope, the 300ft. drop down below the level of the slope is negative altitude
