Ungar Soldering Iron

Hey Racer's,

I am back into R/C Racing (both Nitro and Electric) and I need a 75-100 watt
soldering iron.

I bought a 75 watt "Weller" gun at Hame Depot and it just doesn't get hot
enough.

Where can I get one ? Tower doesn't have one in stock

ANY SUGGESTIONS ??????

AS ALWAYS, Thanks ! ! ! !

Soldering guns are bad news, use an iron. My $13 Weller 40 watt iron has
enough beef to solder just about anything. If you need to solder battleship
hulls, Weller also makes an 80 watt iron. FYI, I think Weller and Ungar are
both Coopertools brands.

Temperature is not what you need. You need heat capacity. A
low-temperature iron (~700 deg or so) with a heavy, broad tip is best
for batteries and power connections. The heavy tip holds heat, so the
iron doesn't cool when you melt a big patch of solder.

I agree 100% with SD. I have that same 40 watt Weller iron and it does the
job very well. For the price you absolutely can't beat it.

Ah, a fellow accountant (although I never pursued the CPA certificate) :-).

You don't want a gun, too heavy and too hard to wield precisely. I would
recommend a station (pencil with a base) with interchangeable tips (so that you
can get a big heavy tip for building packs and a smaller flat one for other
work). Make sure it's comfortable.

I bought a nice Edsyn unit (no doubt overkill). I'm rather impatient, so I
paid a premium to have one that heats quickly (600 degrees in 15-20 seconds).
It's also very comfortable, has a large reservoir for the tip sponge, and can
the base can be adjusted for right or left-handed operation.

I got mine at an Electronics supply house. If you are in Southern CA, try
Orvac in Fullerton or Marvac-Dow in Montclair; they're also good places to get
odds and ends like heat shrink.

Soldering iron/guns.

Hey if you guys are looking for ANY kind of soldering tools, let me know I work for a company that sells this stuff at a nice price. It's older stock but really great quality.
