2nd Annual John Erickson Memorial DLG Fling - January 15-16 2011

Losing a great friend doesn't seem to make the time go by any slower. It's been 12 months since the unexpected passing of John Erickson, a friend to anyone he met. In January we kicked off our contest season with a tribute to JE and had the biggest contest in our history at El Dorado. It was a great event, a Team Select qualifier, and was attended by 31 pilots. For more details on last years event, see the thread below.

DATE: This year we will hold the 2nd Annual John Erickson Memorial DLG Fling to be held at El Dorado Park in Long Beach on January 15-16, 2011.

Time: Pilots meeting at 8:30 sharp both days. Flying immediately afterwards.

Flight Program : We will fly 12 preliminary rounds ( Sat 7, Sun 5) , 4 round flyoff. F3K rules rule.

Lunch time Eats: Subway lunch provided both days:Sandwich, chips, water.

Dinner Eats - Friday Night- I haven't heard back from many folks about having dinner Friday night, only a few. SO I'm changing up the dinner spot for tomorrow night to a great mexican food place that is close to the field. That's right, we're going to Taco Surf for a little local flavor for our out of town guests. It's just south of the corner of Los Alamitos Blvd. and Cerritos, at 10542 Los Alamitos Blvd. Here's a link It's litterally 3 minutes from the park exit east on Spring Street.

If you have any questions , need a ride or anything - my cell # is 714-307-1172.

Saturday Night - BBQ galore at Johnny Rebs in Bellflower. Here's a link with directions from the field.

BTW : Due to an anonymous donation - Futaba pilots eat for Free on Saturday night.

Entry fee: $20.00 per person. There is a $7.00 fee for each vehicle that enters the park, so buddy up!

Awards ; Open -1st thru 5th
Sportsman -1st thru 3rd

Donations :As we did last year, all proceedes will be donated to the California State Parks Commission, John's charity of choice, and the to the USA F3k team for their trip in July.

JEM T-shirts - Available from Doug Montgomery. See page 17, post 244. $8.00 from each shirt sold will go to the USA F3K team to fund their trip to the Worlds next summer.

Registration : There is no formal registration - Everyone will sign-up the morning of the event. Due to the overwhelming response in participation for this years JEM event, I am limiting the pilot entires to the first 48 that sign up. Because we have the least daylight to fly this time of year, I don't want to run more than 4 flight groups of 12 pilots. I am also going to move our starting time up to 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday. This will allow us to get in 7 rounds and still have about 1/2 hour for lunch.

Get on board now! Please send me your name and frequency on this thread if you intend to participate.

Should we make it a two day contest?

I've had several people ask me about making it a two day event for 2011, so I'd like to get the opinions of those of you who might attend - what do you think?

I've been told that the US F3K Tour needs some more 2 day events as part of their plan for next season. I can't think of a more perfect tribute to this event and Johh's memory that to have a great 2 day event kick off the year.

Let me know what you guys think?

Happy Halloween.

I would attend a 2 day contest but I am only 30 min away from the field. If people need housing, showers, and hot food I am more than willing to open my house up to any and all. Party on, Wayne! Party on, Garth!

Two days is just twice as much fun as one day. I'm in either way. Ch17 (still).
