cox 049 for rcpowers extra 300?

hey everyone im new to 1/2a rc and was wondering if i made a balsa wood rcpowers extra 300, will a cox 049 (has the throttle ring) have enough "power" to fly the plane? if so what type of electronics will i be needing? im planning on buying a spektrum dx6i but im not sure if i need a speed controller?

thanks any comment will be much appreciated! and any help full advice will also be appreciated!

It depend on the size and weight of that Extra 300. You don't need a speed controller for IC power, only a small servo to control the trottle but you need to provide proper voltage to the Rx and servos. Spektrum Rx's needs 4.8V at all time or will suffer brown-out and reboot, so a 5 Ni-cad/Nimh with good mA capacity is in order.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4-8V-2300mAh-...item1e5e35bb71 would this battery be ideal for powering the receiver? if not what battery should i use and can i plug the battery in any slot of the reciever?

oh and what would be the ideal weight of the planw for the 049? and if balsa is to heavy could i use depron foam? i would film cover the foam of course.

Will fly for food
That pack is WAY too big for a 1/2A model.

I get my packs from www.cheapbatterypacks.com

FOr 1/2A 500 mAH is plenty

If about 200 square inches, 18<20 Oz would be a maximum for good flight with 1/2A power. And even that would be rather zippy, a 4.8V Rx pack might be a problem with Spektrum system(most uses 5 cells/6V pack). A 500mA pack is gross overkill for 1/2A were weight is always a concern, a same capacity 2 Lipo pack and UBEC would weight a lot less and give same servo power as Nicad/Nimh with less risk of "brown-out" even with a 5 servos set-up.

If you have no previous experience in RC Extra is not a first airplane you'll crash in a blink, better start with a trainer like LST, dont run before walking.

ive already been simulating the extra for about 1 month and the only concern i have for it is the weight and the fact that the 049 wont have enough power for it?

"Simulating" is not the real thing! 1/2A planes tend to fly very fast, specialy when heavy and a sedate trainer would give you a better chance to survive the first flight. Simple trainer are also easier to repair and less prone to damage than a scale job, nothing worst than crash a plane on which you spend lot of detailing time because of a slightly off CG,wrong incidence or wing warp. As alcarafa said its better to learn walking before trying to run

is 750mh too much for the receiver?

It is more about size and weight.

You can use a 2 cell 450 mah lipo for your reciever , it's lighter than any NIcad or Nickel metal batteries.
But your first concern should be size , power plant and weight of plane.
