Cloud Ranger

Hi Tanner:

They are great little kits and just "fall" together, yours looks good.

In the pic I sent of mine, I didn't mention it but I modified mine for a bolt on wing. I just like it better. The only problem I had at that time was finding 8/32 nylon bolts. They are now readily available from ACE or True Value or MicroMax.

Hi Tanner:

I had EP first, I believe a Multiplex inrunner w/planetary gear drive, 3.87/1.00. It flew fine with that combination, but I have many years experience with glow and gassers and just really prefer IC engines. I converted to a Norvel .074 which was great. Of course it is no longer available (to my knowlege) but any engine in that size range, .061 to a .07 should be fine. I have a Thunder Tiger .07 I am going to use in my new Herr J3 (48" version) which will make very nice combination, not as powerful as the Norvel but plenty for the the
J3.

Attached is a pic of the TT .07 for reference.

Ok.I found a .09 engine from Enya would that work?
I am going to use floats on it once I learn how it flies.

Hi Tanner:

Well the .09 is getting a little big for the CR, however the fact that you want to float fly it would probably be ok with throttle management. I think the larger issue would be the weight of the Enya. I have a feeling it might make the CR a lead sled.

There are really two classes (in my opinion) of RC flyers, those that fly on the wing and those that fly on the prop. I fly on the wing, I like more scale speed. Not to say there is anything wrong with prop flyers, we just prefer different regimes.

Source Norvel

Hi Tanner:

There is a guy advertising here in fuel engines and at RC Universe that he has new Norvel engines. Don't know anything about him but maybe worth a look.

"http:/www.rcuniverse.com/market/item/cfm?itemId=668823"

If no luck you can't go wrong with Thunder Tiger at Tower Hobbies.

+1 on the TT .07 engine. I have one in my Sig Nitro Rascal and it fits perfectly. Just a gental toss when the grass at the field is to high and it flys strait out. Plenty of power.

Engine Mounting

Hi Tanner:

Hope the Norvel guy has what you want. Another consideration I didn't mention earlier, is the engine mounting.

If you should go with a Thunder Tiger there is no engine mount required, it has a radial mount vs the beam mount of the Norvel.

More food for thought.

By the way I started my "Herr J3 Build" thread, some of it might prove useful.

Hi Tanner:

Yes the OS .10 compares favorably with the TT .07 in all dimensional areas of concern. So it really just comes down to which one you prefer.

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean, is weight not included in that?
To me these two engines are completely different and the OS .10 is a heavy weight to carry. Here is a little comparison;

OS 10 FSR, prop 7x4-7x5; weight incl. muffler about 160g (5.6 oz) power; 7x4 at about 14500rpm, static thrust; about 700g (≈25oz)

TT 07GP, prop 6x3-6x4, weight incl. muffler; 102g (about 3.6 oz), power 6x3 at about 16500rpm, static trust; about 450g (≈15.8oz)

I don't have the Cloud ranger myself but an OS.10 should pull that thing vertically out of sight, I suggest to keep the weight down and go with a Norvel .061 or the TT 07GP. The Norvel has both a weight and a power advantage over the TT.
