New DW Foamies Yak 55M and SP Build Thread

Hi all Dw lovers, I want to share Dw foamies new Yak 55M and 55SP. This is one of the best if not the best foamie I've flown rivaling the Juka. super straight tracking and full blown tight 3D. The straightest rolling plane I've owned.

This thread will cover a light build setup and paint so you can get the most out of your new DW foamie.

We are going to start with Beveling. You cannot get 60 degrees of through without proper beveling. Using a straight edge and a new exacto blade, line your straight edge along the edge of your control surface and score it at a 40 degree angle. scoring it will ensure a smooth cut and will extend the life of the blade. Bevel both surfaces. See photos.

Tomorrow I will put up a vid of beveling and taping.

Nice Vid! Thanks for going into detail.

I've built a few DW foamies and thought my building techniques were ok.

I was wrong! I've got way more to learn.

You brought two too many.

Subscribed, very cool, Mike should put you on the assembly line. I want my planes pre-beveled!

That's interesting how you bevel from the top and cut in. I've always done it from the top and out.

I was kind of wondering if Mike could put a tool path in to bevel the control surfaces? You'd probably have to hit them with a sanding block lightly, but it might work.

I understand that beveling only takes a few minutes to do, but is there a reason the kits don't come pre beveled?

A lot of people have different hinging styles and types, unbeveled gives you the choice. Plus, for the most part one man personally cuts assembles, packs and ships all kits here in the US. Last to save cost.

Mike has now added the order options to bevel as well as bevel and tape for a very modest cost. If you go for bevel and tape it is pretty much just straight-forward gluing parts together. His kits are so reasonably priced that adding the beveling and taping is still a very good value for what you get.

Joe - thanks for doing this thread and for answering the question about beveling. I have four 3s 2200 20c zippys for a parkzone model that has about met its end. After I get this Extreme Flight Edge 540 flying, my plan is to pick up a 48" Juka or 55M and use those zippys. So I'm eagerly following this build thread. Can you tell me the differences between the 55M and 55SP? I don't see these kits up on the DWfoamies website.

PS - do you know what the pre-bevel/tape option costs?
