he's joking. A very expensive thrust vectored turbine F-16 as a first model is fine for some billionaires that can have fun just crashing several of them but not practical for your normal people. Even an EDF in this size....good chance that also had an expensive stabilization system in it as well...

A4? Douglas A4 Skyhawk! Not a beginner plane!
I'm not sure but this might be a better start. F9F http://www.rc-castle.com/index.php?r...roduct_id=1530 T-33 http://www.porcupinerc.com/Sky-Angel...io_p_1075.html or this T45 http://www.porcupinerc.com/Volantex-...dio_p_804.html Go for low weight short flights (small battery). When You got the experience increase weight. |

What about the new FMS Viper as a beginner EDF? I've flow a lot of prop planes for many decades. I love my 3DHS Slick 51, for example. The only EDF I've flown is a UMX Habu but modded with a 3S power system. It's a fast little screamer but not like the big boys. Landings can be sloppy with little to no damage.
So I'm thinking my first "real" EDF should be this new FMS with flaps? What do you guys think? A relatively large wing is what I'm looking at with good thrust. A nice sounding 12 blade is gravy as is the color scheme. Love Blue Angels colors! http://www.fmsmodel.com/fns-70mm-super-viper |

I think the biggest differences for me will be no propwash over the control surfaces and slow thrust build. |

Also time your first flight to be 3 minutes....EDF's have short flights before you hit 3.8 per cell and be confident of your flight path as there is no nose prop to pull you out of sudden trouble. Landings can be tricky only int he sense that a lot of EDF's can be floaty depending on how much of a delta wing you have. My F35 is so floaty, it hates to come down. I have to dead stick it and do a high alpha nose up landing....but when you nail it you will giggle... |

The 1 thing I had to get a bit more used to with the Rebel was adding a smidge of throttle at touchdown to keep the plane from bouncing off the deck. |

Yup... plan ahead. Fortunately our field is very open and clear, so it'll be just me and the plane and the runway... and flaps... gotta install those flaps... |

A lower Mah lipo is fine as long as the C rating holds up to the amp draw.
Another benefit is a lighter and better flying plane. |

So rather than fly long and land hard once ... go for short flight many soft landings. |

I don't mind short flights....since landing is the most fun and challenging...just to nail it perfectly.
You can have an amazing flight.....botch the landing..and then you just erased that great flight. Just bring more batteries! |

Hi all
Finally managed to get membership at our local flying club in norcal. 500' sealed runway and unlimited flying space as far as the eye can see. Time to get back into some EDF's. But what to buy, these larger freewing rigs are freakin awesome!!!! Being a Naval Aviation enthusiast I cant take my eyes off the A-4 and the T-45. Never liked the lines of the A-6 and I already have a an old 70mm Blitz Hornet. Tomcat is the best looking jet ever built and is at the top of the list but looks like too many apportunities for mechanical issues? But I also like the features on the Yak and the F-15 and F-16 look sweet. But the main factor in my purchase decision is to buy a jet with robust landing gear but without the tendancy to porpise or wheelbarrow on landing. Just nice predictable scale landings is what I am after. I see too many fancy flying EDF's that are easily bent upon return to earth. my first visit to the new field and I saw 2 new EDF's sent to the hangar for landing gear rebuilds. With that in mind, any suggestions? I am thinking the Yak is a winner with its great landing gear setup and lower wing loading. Plus looks great and very scale. Second maybe the T-45 with the slats? Thoughts? |
