Electric A1H / AD6 Douglas Skyraider

OK Gentlemen,
I'm tired of waiting for a smaller than a .60 size AH1 AD6 Skyraider.
So I'm doing it myself!
I have almost finished the CAD drawings of an "accurate" AD1 Skyraider.
They are scaleable right now.
With all the books out there, it's funny how the R/C plans for this bird are junk or just sport sorta scale. yuck!
The lines are wrong and don't get me going about the canopies!

To get the fuse right I had to do some indepth research..thanks to the plastic model companies!

So I'm posing one question, how big?Answered

My original goal was 53.5" WS so it would be in scale with the PZ T28 and their F4U Corsair.
The thought of them flying in formation would be really neat.
But then 53.5" is big for a "park flyer)

Final model will have a 47" Wing span

I’m a designer with decades of experience and the access to the tools to get this done.

The model kit will have a fiberglass fuse
sheeted wings and tail.. vert stab is integral part of the fiberglass fuse (don’t panic purists)

Battery access will be through the top, under the canopy.

No retract design (you guys can do it after)

The spark that ignited this idea was E Flite’s F86. FG Fuse and sheeted built up wings.
No denting foam. Don’t get me wrong, I have foam jets and planes up the kazoo, but that edf is damn nice by any standard. And visually accurate.

So there you go
Cheers
Bill

Bill,

I think your original goal of 53.5" WS would be perfect and I don't believe it puts it out of the park flyer category.

I think you'd have an instant hit on your hands. Love the idea of F/G with the sheeted wings.

any thing in the 50 to 60 in W.S. and you can use the Kyosho rotating retracts...A buddy is doing one as I type with them..

It would be nice to size it to use some of the E-flite electric retracts, if only they made them in the correct type to match what the Skyraider needs. They are the best thing since sliced bread IMO

I know I would prefer 40-45" for a parkflyer at max, but hey, that's my preference! Are you going for the fold-in wings? Never seen that before on a RC, must be extremely difficult to build.

Definetely a beautiful airplane! I'll be following this build with interest

Woot,woot...Finally a skilled and talented modeler will finally build the waaay overdue parkfler Skyraider,I myself would prefer in the 35-40ish ws,about the same size and proportions as the Pz T28..and hopefully fly just as nicelyI will be following this very closely and waiting for the finished product impatiently U sir r a godsendD

If you haven't already you might read through this thread for info...

Fiberglass fuse and sheeted wings sound MUCH nicer than foam Myself, I don't really care about retracts as I fly off grass most of the time, the option for the builder too choose No gear, fixed or retracts would be nice Since all my electrics are park flyer's I'd say 42"-45" wing span would be about right and if we could keep the AUW right around 2lb that would be great! Of course, it's going to be VERY hard to not scale it out with a butt load of armament and push the AUW over the top

Saw that. It looks like it's stalled. hope it wasn't a "vapor project" .I'm so impatient though.
The thread only shows one pic of a prototype?
Maybe if he is producing a 40 ish foam skyraider, I should go with the 54" one?

I've sunk my teeth into this thing and I'm not letting go.
I will post pics of key developements, cad model first.

Final decision on size will be Wed Sept 15. Yup I'm on SCHEDULE!

3D mill to the rescue!

Thanks for the interest and Please keep the feedback coming!
Save some popcorn for me!

I'm leaning 75% 53.5" WS

That leaves 45"WS at 25%

and 25% are undecided
