My first rc boat build/baitboat

Hi evrybody.

I am planning to build a bait boat to aid my fishing.

The purpose of this boat it to take both bait and lines out to hard to reach spots (reeds, lillies, overhanging bushes so on).

Because of this i intend to use water jet drives as apposed to props.
My reasoning behind this is to not get caught/tangled in reeds and stuff.

I have ideas and a plan all in my head, I just need to clear up a few things before I go ahead.

My questions are as follows if anybody is nice enough to come to my rescue :

I am planning to make it from 1mm thick aluminium sheet, I estimate the final product with all components will weigh around 2kg. With bait loaded in to the hopper/s I am expecting the overall weight to be around 4kg max.

1) Will I need one or two jet drives to push this through the water?
I can not find how much thrust jet drive produce or have any idea if this would be sufficient for a boat of this weight.

2) I intend to weld the aluminium parts together (neat tidy welds down the seams) Is there any better way (in the modelling world) to glue/seal the (aluminium) boat structure together?

3) I intend the boat to be roughly 18inches long, 11 wide, 5/6 deep. The inside area should be one complete compartment, apart from a 4" sq space at the back to contain the hopper/s. Any ideas on how bouyant this craft would be with the 4kg max weight? Could I go smaller?

**EDIT**
4) The boat needs to be quite maneuverable. Would the jet drive/s be sufficient for an on the spot 360 turn. Or as I played with the thought would i need to add bow thrusters?

Any help/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Rich.

Welcome to the forum.

There are two main problems that I see.
The first: this is a 15" and under forum.
The second: your projected boat might be too small.

The third: nothing wrong with using aluminum, but is it necessary?

Most jet drives are for racing purposes, not tug style running. Any metal may be too heavy, plus you will have to worry about rust and corrosion.

You should get more help in the Dock Talk section.

i can see the want of a jet drive as there is no prop sticking out to catch on the line or weeds etc.

My point exactly derk.
I realised after i posted it is in totally the wrong section.
I have re-posted in dock talk, thanks.

However any further thoughts from your experiences would be great.

Jet drives really aren't for racing purposes at all, they're better suited for scale applications.

Here's my modified Tear Into, brushless motor (3200kv 450 outrunner) and lipo (3s 2200mah). It is a TINY (maybe 1-2mph) faster top end than a bone stock aquacraft mini rio, and a touch slower than a mini rio with a better prop. It does however accelerate MUCH better, and turns sharper at lower speeds. It's not good in waves though, since the jet drive loses prime (not a concern for slower models).

Tear into - lunch fun! (2 min 28 sec)

I guess I over exaggerated what I meant. By "race", I mean't nippy, on step type running.
