But what is the output of the transmitter at the 2S voltage level. It might take less current, generate less heat but also only be producing half the power

Had I know you'd be bending piano wire landing gear, you could have used my famous Skip Hatheway landing gear bending tools.

If my understanding of some of IBCrazy's posts is correct, even reducing the power by 1/2 will only reduce the range by 1/4. Using a 2 cell LiPo rated at similar MWh shouldn't cause any significant reduction.

Think about it this way: If the trade-off for a marginally smaller range is crystal clear video and less drop-outs or risk of control loss and you aren't going for long range flights, then I'd say it's probably worth it.

Although with testing, I'd think that a proper voltage regulator would be a better solution. Keeping the volts in the proper range while not giving up any capacity is the ideal.

I saw a lot of posts where people use the main power battery (motor battery) and use 5v equipment with a voltage reg and filter. Less weight, less possibility of failure.

I'm quite happy with the 12v equipment I have right now. I used it on the rc truck in the house and although the VTx becomes hot, no problem with it yet. When the truck is moving it does give some airflow to reduce heating but it is still a bit hotter than on the plane. all my system is rated 12v, don't know if I can reduce the voltage and still keep it working ? I am afraid that if I lower the voltage, the margin I may have may be reduced if the 2S battery losses a bit of power ?

Would really like to see someone measure the transmitter output on both voltages, if it is all really running on 5v, it might be the same.

I'll keep it in mind for the future, was kinda fun smashing on it with a big hammer though...

I know a guy who probably has an RF wattmeter that works up in that frequency.

Yup, If it's feeding a voltage regulator that knocks it down to 5v then it shouldn't hurt the signal along as it can feed the regulator correctly... If it's not... Then signal loss...

I'm not sure all these VTX's are made the same... It might work on one and not another... so probably would have to experiment between different brands...
