Complete instructions for a dual HP DPS-1200

This is the best detailed "How-to" on making a 24V supply from the very popular DPS-1200 supplies I have come across. Extremely detailed step by step instructions with clear photos. Very nicely done.

Backplane connectors

If you prefer to connect to a server power supply with the correct mating connector rather than directly solder to the power and control pins, Digikey have a comprehensive range of them.

They are listed under "Backplane Connectors - Specialized" and it looks like some of the more common connectors are the Amphenol PwrBlade series.

You can browse and look for a matching one and check if it is correct by downloading a pdf of the specification sheet. The link for PwrBlade connectors is:

http://www.digikey.com/product-searc...=0&pageSize=25

There are lots of other brands and the Digikey site has a useful filtering system that can narrow the search.

Big thanks to irun4fundotca who alerted me to this.

Updated my blog post to address a couple of errors, and messed it up a bit. . . the system changed the URL, so I thought I'd post the updated one.

Ready made solutions

These PS are popular with Bitcoin miners and others as well as modellers and a number of ready made solutions have appeared. There are a number of established vendors selling supplies already converted and ready to go.

In addition however there are also a couple of connection units ready to plug into the very popular DPS-1200 and DPS-800 powers supplies for people who don't want to do any soldering or modding. RCGroups member vimy g eaou has confirmed that these units are of excellent quality.

Ds760sl-3

The DS760SL-3 is a slim and very silent server power supply. I picked it up for $10 at Wierd Stuff Warehouse in Palo Alto.

The fan start intermittently only when you reach about 300-400W output in a 20 degrees C room.

Buy it from digikey if you have lots of money: http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...434-ND/2486047

Datasheet here:
https://www.artesyn.com/power/assets...1456937282.pdf

From the datasheet you read that both PSON and PSKILL must be pulled low for the PSU to operate the +12vdc output. I did that, and then (and only then) did the +12vdc output turn on. Please see attached screenshots and pictures of the specifics.

Jump T1-T2 (T1 is ground).

Temporary jumping B8 to T1/T2 makes the fan speed go to 100%, disconnecting it afterwards the fan settles back down.

Seems to work just fine.
