I would say for public degradation rather than education. But the values instilled by the early schools led to what we were prior to the non-believers gaining such ground.

Yep... the burning of poor unfortunate women who's sin was compassion to try to assist an afflicted the best she knew how... and if the poor unfortunate happened to die, she was decried an evil witch and burned at the stake for her failings in medicine and willingness to show compassion.

There is little doubt for me that the rise in non belief has a lot to do with the hypocrisy of believers who struggle to find moral fiber.
