ON SPRECKELS LAKE: Power Runs, Events, Sail & the SFMYC (kinda, sorta, maybe)!

Thread Discliamer: Ok, gang, this is NOTHING official nor authorized by the
Powers-That-Be of the San Francisco Model Yacht Club.

Just something like the Hansen gang and the Central Coast boys have put up; a place to make some announcements, hang a few photos and chit chat about what's happening at the Lake, not only with some of the Club's power boaters, but also what is happening with the "Irregulars," the local model boaters who are NOT SFMYC affiliated but who also run gas and electrics on Spreckles Lake during the legally permitted hours.

For official 'doin's,' you can find the Club's official website here.

This thread supports:
Model Boating of all types on Spreckels Lake in General and
EVERYONE interested in our hobby.

Not just the SFMYC.

So - Long as everyone has that clear that this is nothing official nor SFMYC sanctioned;
onward and downward! To the Abyss!!!

For the OFFICIAL San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department RULES that govern all boating on Spreckels Lake and in San Francisco's Parks... Click here. and here.
These "rules" have the force of law under the San Francesco Municipal Code's Park Code.

Update from Feb 2012 Newsletter...

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT OF CLUB POLICY

The following additions to Club policy #3, Use of Spreckels Lake by Members, were unanimously approved by club members at the January meeting. The purpose is to ensure that all classes of R/C sailboats have the maximum opportunity to practice and improve their sailing skills.
  • Spreckels lake is a public lake in a public park. Model boating activities of the SFMYC do not have priority over public use of the lake.
  • All classes of R/C sailboats must be allowed to compete and participate in non-scheduled, informal “pick-up” races, subject to a basic knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing by the skippers. Experienced members are encouraged to treat such “pick-up” races as opportunities for training and instruction of less experienced members.
  • All R/C sailboats operated by club members that are not competing in formal, club sanctioned regattas or informal, non-scheduled races, must keep approximately 30 feet away from those that are.

Guy's Whomever this is I appreciate the idea and the work it took to make it up, but I probably will have to answer to the board for it. So it would be nice if I knew what and whom I was talking to the Board about. And also you forgot to mention the Navigator Regatta and the Fishing Boat FunRun on OCT. 10, which is a date change. So go for it but give me a bit of info to fend off the Grumbling Grannies.

"The Central Coast Boys" are still not gelled enough to have found a regular place and meet time. With the loss of Toesup in the area, well, he was a prime mover.

I have been tempted to take a road trip down to Hansen but I need to have something cool to take down there. My current project is a super inexpensive, top secret, rescue and recovery boat! I'm still quarreling in my head on the final design (down to 2 candidates for drive system!).

Marc Racer is still finding ways to crash his go-fast stuff, gotta watch that kid.

So, we are watching and hoping other clubs get going and doing regular stuff, give us some 'umph' to get our act together.

I used to believe this as well but it is not the case. The Central Park Model Yacht Club was founded on December 17th, 1916, so the SFMYC, founded in 1896, is the oldest continuously operating model yacht club by a little over 20 years. I think the confusion may stem from an 1894 article Model Yachting About New York by Frank Nichols when he mentions a club in Manhattan whose pond proved unsuitable and later collapsed. There has been model yachting of one form or another in New York City since about the 1840s, but no organization has had the legs or the stamina of the SFMYC.

Course those bloody English have everybody tarred... their clubs date back as far as 1720!!!

I can't speak to reasons, but I can say all during the 70's and into early 80s, a typical Sunday at the Lake would be anywhere from 30 to 60 members of the power boat squadron and maybe half again as many assorted "hangers on." I have photos dating back further, to after the war (WWII) with literal crowds, each man with a big boat, many the size of Sterling's Chris Craft 63' or larger, most scratch or from plans.

Regattas and special events/runs usually turned out with 75 to 100 or more participants.

I never had a problem missing events because they are on the club calendar for all who care to look.

Of course the drop off in attendance is primarily because this is a dying hobby period.

Kids care more about their PS3's and being "plugged in"- constant media/ video game/ cell phone texting saturation making them disregard anything that takes even a modicum of time to accomplish forget spending 300 hours to make a model they wont spent 3 hours on anything. Even English teachers complain they cannot assign novels over 200 pages and pupils are incapable of writing cohesive missives longer than 1 paragraph (length of a Facebook entry).

We also believed the SFMYC was the second oldest club for a long time because we thought that the Central Park Model Yacht Club had been formed in 1894. I used to hear that figure a lot at the Clubhouse or Lakeside, so it was quite a surprise when the CPMYC traced it's origins back to 1916.

Just a quick note that we got the Steamup completed. Was a typical Aug. day with Fog and a light drizzle off and on but not enough to get you wet. Had a couple of flame-outs and rescue needed but overall went very well. Not many Footy's showed up but the arrivals sailed them just to show that the Lil Suckers are a viable type. SFMYC took a ton of photo's so should show up here in a day or so. Was so busy talking and running stuff forgot to take pictures, Aero did the same, but we both got boats in the water and practised some.

Beautifully crafted primarily from copper sheet and nearly completed, the SS Tahoe is being built by SFMYC member, Alan J. Zulberti, and is a fine example of the modeler's art!

Portland is a great city and the skiing up on Hood is fantastic, but the property tax situation in Oregon sucks compared to say, Ca.

I knew right when I posted about no water in Vegas that someone would say something about Lake Mead 30 or so miles away from Vegas.

I have been there and the Hoover Dam is an awesome engineering achievement, especially considering when it was built.

Pretty cool to be able to walk across the dam and see a clock at each end with each being an hour different in time due to the time zone line being right where the dam is.

The spillways for overflow if they ever get any again are large enough to float a WWII battleship. It says it right there on the sign.

That's 'zactly what you can have here

If you want another Steam-Up next year in 2011, jump up an' down, stamp yer feet, holler and yell, raise a ruckus and generally let folks at the Club know that you'd like to see it happen again! (Becoming a member couldn't hurt...) But mostly let folks know you want to come play next year then show up!

There was plenty of room on Spreckels Lake this year for more boats and more participants. This is how you "grow" events!

Great boats and folks
Portland won't dry up and blow away if you come down and play by The Lake for a weekend or so... really Maybe you can make it in 2011.

Everyone I moved the Fishing Boat Funrun to Oct. 10th Sunday to make room for the SwapMeet on Sat. 9th. so if we need a bit of time to get our goodies and cash together for that this is your wakeup call.

Sounds good Lee. Has the San Fran club ever had a swap meet before? Do they usually get a good turn out?

This is the second one and figure it will be a fair attendance. There were several transactions completed last year, I scored a Stanley Hurdee-Gurdee drill for my collection and a non-member friend got a bandsaw and a 2.4ghz trans. for a decent price.

Sign your life away! Join up (a mere $30 ) and come play. The bigger and more active the Power Squadron, the more power events!

Here's an application form (Adobe PDF format) (Easier than joining the Mobile Infantry! )

As a kid growing up in SF I always admired the boats at the SFMYC. Now I have a Coast Guard boat which I converted into the SFPD Police Boat Marine 1 and would love to take it out on the lake one Sunday. Do I need to be a member or can I just show up? And what is the upcoming Navigater Regatta?

Vspeeds...

You can just show up and run within the times as set forth by SF Park & Rec. and prōclāmāted thereby in signage nailed upon a tree...

Basically, 10:00am to 1:00pm for power boats; Sail from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Nitro-powered boats are restricted to, IIRC, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, as well as being covered by noise and speed restrictions, again, Park and Rec Dept. rules. Spreckles Lake itself is always open to the public.

If there is a Regatta, you can join the Regatta if you wish or not, you just have to abide by the Frequency board (have the Freq flag for your transmitter unless you're using a 2.4ghz like a Specktrum).

The Navigator Regatta is a Navigation/boat handling skills contest, but I'll leave the specifics to either CaptLee or Aerominded to tell since they're a bit closer to the planning than I. It might be somewhat like this Tug Event back in '06.

Looking forward to seeing your boat and meeting you on The Lake!!

ps. Got pictures of your boat??? Inquiring minds wanna see

As Craig says, the lake is open to the public but there are posted rules re: times, location and type of boats which should be followed.

You will find people running boats most weekends at the lake but days with scheduled events will see the most activity, generally.

The Navigator regatta this year will be a complex steering course. Ususally skippers get free range on the lake side to move where they need to to see their boat through the course. Each boat will run through the course several times. each time, the skipper will be increasingly limited to their movement on shore. this makes getting around the course without touching a mark more difficult with each run. Not sure if the PSO is planning to make this a timed event as well.

We would like to see you participate at the event! 47' CG/SFPD boat would be a great boat for the course!

Yeah, it will be timed in the last section to eliminate ties, figure it will be time to injure Aero to make it fair for the rest of us, he probably will object. Am bringing my Vac-U-duck so it will be a real competive course. Any and all types of boats are useful in this one if the Skipper can handle them in a nautical manner. have heard it said that the navigation is easy, but the depth perception part is the toughie.

Hee hee, I'm no threat on Nav courses! The driver of "Castaway" et al is the one we need to keep our eye on this year!

Looking forward to the event!

Drove by the Lake today and shot a couple of frames of Park & Rec.'s Rules..

SEC. 3.02. SIGNS TO BE OBEYED.
No person shall willfully disobey the notices,
prohibitions or directions on any sign posted by
the Recreation and Park Commission or the
Recreation and Park Department. (Added by
Ord. 603-81, App. 12/18/81)

also

SEC. 4.01. - DISORDERLY CONDUCT.

No person shall, in any park without permission of the Recreation and Park Department:
(d) Carry or use a model airplane which is powered by liquid fuel or designed to be used with such fuel;

And they just added the " No Smoking" sign... SF Health Code, Article 19I

*sigh* Kinda makes me want a cigarette... even though I quit a decade ago!

Older(original) sign up a tree, north (sail) side of Spreckles Lake...

"Model Yacht Facility
No Fishing Allowed
Power boats on south side of lake only between 10am and 1pm Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday only"

and the new signage in a couple of places near the power 'pit area' on the south side of the Lake reads...
  1. Internal Combustion (IC) and Nitro powered boats may be operated on the lake from 10amto 1pm Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays only. Sail boats shall have full access of the lake at all times.
  2. IC and Nitro powered boats must not be operated at speeds in excess of 15 MPH and must not exceed a decible noise level of 60 at full throttle at 50' from the meter on shore.
  3. All local and state laws must be observed in the interest of safety.
  4. Powered boats are to steer clear of all wildlife on the lake.
  5. No more than two IC or Nitro powered boats may be operated on the lake at any one time.
  6. IC/Nitro powered boats shall be run in a clockwise direction and remain outside of the far-east and far-west ends of the lake.
  7. Radio frequency flags must be properly displayed on antennas whenever in use.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I'll make it out there soon and depending on my kids' games I'm definitely going to try to make it to the Navigator Regatta.
