Annual fishing boat fun run regatta - 2010

The annual "Fishing Boat Fun Run" Regatta for 2010.

October 10, 2010, Spreckels Lake, Golden Gate Park!!!

The weather early in the day through mid-day was pretty icchy; fog and socked in overcast. As I said lousy weather, but it gives great light for shooting models since it is a near flat illumination with hardly perceptible shadow and a high light level; I couldn't have asked for better shooting weather for digital! Like having a natural light tent! (Not to mention good for very moody shots as well as you can see from the murkiness of the day in the backgrounds of a number of Vspeed's shots. You know, that haunted scottish moors, Hound of the Baskervilles (cue the howling), Jack the Ripper stalking Whitechapel kind of weather... in other words, a typical San Francisco summer day )

In a way it was perfect weather for a fishing boat regatta as fishing boats go out to earn their keep in the foggy, misty dawn and lousy weather to find their catches. Wonderful weather actually - for fishing boats.

Free Run Time: The 'Irregualrs' take to The Lake with their go-fasties!

With the end of the official regatta in the afternoon, the Irregulars (folks who are regulars at Spreckles Lake, but who choose not to join the San Francisco Model Yacht Club) get their go-fasties fired up and start running some laps!

The sun started to come out from behind the cloud cover after about 13:30 and by 14:00 or so, there was full sunshine and the day started to really warm up.

In other words... more photos to come LOL

Craig C,

No I wasn't on a boat for Fleet Week, I was at the Wave Organ (the end of the breakwater which leads into the Saint Francis and the Golden Gate Yacht Clubs' Harbor).

The Fishing Boat Fun Run was great. A lot of nice boats and the attention to detail especially from the Louis G and my favorite the Orca are phenomenal. You're absolutely correct in that photos do not do these boats justice. It really looks like the real full size boat was somehow shrunken down to model size!

I see since I left early a lot more boats showed up. Thanks for posting the pictures. Oh yeah, the pictures I took with your lens seams focused to my unprofessional eye. The one of the rigging on the Louis G is from your lens...I think its file dsc8898

This happened after the Fishin' Boat Fun Run on Sunday, all it took was one sunny afternoon, a lake, some kids, a radio and an old boat!

Wednesday Night Operations on Spreckels Lake - 13 October 2010

Wednesday Night Operations on Spreckels Lake...

After The Club's "Fishing Boat Fun Run" I was invited to come and join the Irregulars for a 'night run' on Wednesday evening around dusk. Sure glad that I did. I had a lot of fun and I am looking forward to the next one, hopin' that I'll have my boat back in running order as well as having the camera.

Kmot...

In answer to your question about Cameras...

I shoot NIkon D200s, but in many ways it IS NOT the camera! (No! No BS about about ya gotta have an eye here... Having a technically well made, good camera is part of the equation that yealds good to superior photos, especially now with digital. (There is a real reason why people pay so damned much for Leicas.)

The camera catches and fixes the images before dumping the images into a memory/storage system be it chemical (silver halide emulsion) or digital, but the camera box does not form the image; that is done by the lens. The lenses I've been using to create the images I've been posting here are all Nikon and are as follows...

24-120mm f/1:3.5-f/1:5.6 ED D "Streetsweeper"
80-200m f/1:2.8 IF ED D lens (Just about everything I've posted before late September '10 in including "Steam-Up '10," "2009 West Coast Sub Run" etc.)

200mm f/1:2 ED IF G VR
The Nikon "Chubby" or "Super Chub" (Wednesday Night Ops!)
300mm f/1:2.8 ED IF D (rental a couple of weeks ago) used for September 11 the X-Class Free Sail race, Sunday, 9/12 Power Run Part 1, Part 2 and the Santa Barbara race.

200-400mm f/1:4 ED IF G VR
- Shot the Navigator and a fair amount of the Fleet Week Airshow pics, except the Hyde St. Pier shots which where the 200mm f/2.

VSPEED, as you will have seen above with both the models and airshow shots, shoots some very, very nice stuff as well. Part of the reason is he also uses the Nikon 80-200 f/1:2.8 IF ED as well.

The lens' combination of long focal length and constant, low f/stop (f/1:2.8) in this lens are really critical to doing models well since the lens does near-MACRO as well. (Who cares if it's true macro or not as long as it gets "that close" and still focuses sharp as a tack as this lens does!) It is one of the two lenses that I view as an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE if you want to take your visuals to the next level.

Update: Spring 2011
While I still use a D200 occasionally, I have up graded to a D300.
More mega-pixels; 12.3 on a DX sensor. Shooting exclusively Nikon RAW Format (nef) files.
Better light sensitivity, better dynamic range (yippeee!) and a bit more accurate auto-focus system, but still not as accurate as I would like; critical focus is off sometimes, but this is an endemic issue with AF cameras. (I know, I know I'm a fussy SOB...)

Waiting to see what the next generation of Nikon DSLRs brings after the D700s...

That night run was a blast. Thanks for inviting me. Next time I'll make sure my transmitter battery is fully charged. Craig, those night shots look great.

About those 2 F16's in post #208, I didnt know they were armed until i saw the pics. I've never seen armed aircraft participate in an airshow. The last time I saw a similar weapons load out like that was during the SF hosted All Star Game when the F16's provided security for the " national security event"

Yeah, I was kinda shocked as well, When I was processing that image through Photoshop, I really stopped and did a "Holy Crap!" triple take!

First it was Damn! They've got munitions on their hardpoints...
Then a bit more tweaking and "Damn! Are those AIM-9s!??!" then the big one, "They're painted white!! What the hell? Warshots????"

The loads on the inner hardpoints are external ranks, right?

Those do look like air to air missiles and maybe some kind of electronic stores under the fuselage. Those big things are usually personal belonging pods but in pairs like that they could very well be external fuel tanks...but i'm no pro.

Discussions are ongoing this week, Final Go/No Go on Friday, Oct.22. Include in discussions is to cancel or move back a week. As a forecaster I suck so will just have to wait till Friday and see what the wheels decide.

I will wait for the official decision. If the event is cancelled I am not making the 1000 mile trip. I can always go another time. I would like to know sooner than Friday though. Makes it kind of hard to plan waiting to the last possible moment.

Kmot I agree with the late decsion but the Weather has moved from Saturday to Sun-Mon and then the Sunday is showing PC with a 30% chance, so I am doing the Happy Dance as hard as I can to drive the rain away. Friday is our drop dead chance to order the food and tables so that is how it came about. Like Aero i will be there and get something wet (Top and bottom if it rains) regardless. Made a plastic bag raincoat for my transmitter, hope I do not nee to use it.

Wooden Boats on Parade 2010

Regardless of weather, plans are being made to proceed with WBOP this year inside the SFMYC clubhouse! The Event Chair has ordered extra tables for displaying boats, a raffle is going to be held for prizes and lunch will be provided to participants and their crew. It is also suggested that a canopy or two may be set up at lakeside for those who choose to run their boats- even if there is rain. (count me in! )

While sunshine is desired, this sounds to me like it will still be a great time, rain or shine!

This is what I got regarding WBOP 2010...

Hello friends,

As you know, Wooden Boats on Parade is scheduled for this Sunday. And, as you probably also know, rain is predicted for this weekend. This presents me, as the organizer of WBOP, with a number of options, none of them really great. The options are:

1. Postpone Wooden Boats until the following weekend, Oct. 31 and Nov 1.

2. Cancel it entirely until next year or 2012

3. Hold Wooden Boats in the clubhouse, bring the R/C boats inside, and maybe there'll be a break and we can go for a sail.

Postponing it just prolongs the uncertainty because, as we get deeper into Fall, the chance of rain increases. Who knows if the following weekend will be any better. If we cancel, then we just get no show at all.

It seems like the least-worst option is to have Wooden Boats in the clubhouse, like a giant Frostbite Regatta. I've ordered extra tables, and we'll still have lunches and a raffle for great prizes. If you don't want to get the topsides of your boat wet, we'll have a canopy at the front door of the clubhouse, and you'll be able to drive right up to the front door. Maybe the skies might clear up at some point and we can have some time on the water. We might have a canopy or two at lakeside if you want to sail.

Please spread the word to your fellow club members and friends to come on out to Wooden Boats on Parade, rain or shine. It'll be fun!

Thanks,

Bob, Wooden Boats on Parade Chairman

I'm all for the event being indoors, and hoping for a break in the weather, to go out and play, as I'm traveling from Las Vegas to the show.

Well as I can see it is a Go for Sunday and WBOP 2010 is on. Bring boats and if it looks like a chance to put some in the water we will do so. Meet in the Clubhouse and at very least will get some time to shoot the Bull, have lunch and generally have a get-together. If you have a pop-up bring it along so you have a bit of a place to get in out of the rain, also bring a jacket and a raingear top. Also it helps to use a plastic bag for the transmitter as they are like a cat and hate to be wet. A "Granny sack" with a small hole for antenna works in the emergency times.

Well I am OUT. Was really looking forward to this event but there's no since going to SF if it going to pour down rain all day. I wish this event was a little earlier in the year.

Me too. The weather is not so much an issue for the local guys. But for me it would have meant driving in the rain for hours from Woodland to SF, and then back again. And also from LA to Woodland today in the rain, and possibly half way back to LA in the rain on Monday.

I'm just not up to that kind of travel anymore.

OK. this is really nuttso but...

As of 04:30, my location, it is not raining and, as I stepped outside, we have "high fog" as cloud cover, and, get this, a dry, gusting, wind blowing from the south...

According to the weather predictions, worst chances of rain peak (around 90%) at 10:00 and 15:00.

NOAA's long range radar is showing the rain just grazing San Francisco to the north near The Gate at this point...

Who knows.

I'm looking at the Exploratorium roof top camera (thanks for the link woodybob) and it's pouring rain in the area.

BTW, you get on a que when you go to the cam and then you get a 60 second turn at actually controlling it and you can move it as you wish. That's awesome!

The Eighth bi-annual WOODEN BOATS ON PARADE 2010

Well, THAT was a sucker hole in the storm, that's for sure... WET!!! LOL

The eighth bi-annual
WOODEN BOATS ON PARADE 2010

Sunday, October 24, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
at Spreckels Lake

Unfortunately, North Sea conditions (relatively) on Spreckles Lake claimed two boats for Davy Jones when they foundered and took water... One a pocket battleship, rwood's version the Kreigsmarine Panzerschiff DKM Lützow (ex-Deutschland) and the other an innocent tug that tried to rescue her.

Otherwise everyone pretty much stayed snug as bugs in a warm rug, tucked away in the SFMYC Clubhouse. 58 boats were on display and the event was wildly successful from my point of view... to wit; lots of beautiful boats on display, lots of people crowded around into The Clubhouse "OOooing" and AAHHhhhing" over said very pretty boats, lots of new faces, a good lunch and happy talk all round. Who could ask for better... (Yeah yeah, getting in some run time as well, I know) but all in all a pretty darned nice event for everyone I talked to.

Anywayz! Gotz pictures, just have to edit so, as always, more to come!!!!

And, as always, need some help getting names to boats, matching owner/Captains to boats and getting peoples' names... so if you know any of the foregoing - PM ME!!!!

I had me a blast and I won a ESC in the raffle...

Passed another milestone as well...

Sometime around 17:00 - 17:15 today, our thread passed 10,000 views. This makes this thread one of the most visited threads on the boating forums with about 125 visits per day.

We also did it in under 82 days!!!! No thread has come this far, this quickly, EVER!!!! Correction... Dug my calculator out and for average hits per day, apparently, only four other Dock Talk threads have as many or higher daily hit counts; the Springer Sticky, the two Hansen Dam threads and the ever popular Caption This thread. Whoops... Got carried away! Still pretty darned good!

Number 23 with a bullet on the Dock Talk Hit Parade!!!

Wow - Some really "unbelieveable" boats on display today. Really nice! If it wasn't for people in the background of some pics - you would have thought I went down to the docks.

Sorry I didn't get to know everyone - I had the 3 kids with me (hehehe) and they were wide eyed over all the boats. Maybe next time - a little more socializing. Great production for a "plan-B" at the last moment due to weather. It got pretty insane as time ticked and unless you were looking for the "perfect storm" you wouldn't have wanted to be sea bound.

thanks for having me visit and show my boats.

I had a great time and happy my friend Jim did also. A lot of great boats were to be seen and the room was flying with helpful knowledge from all modelers. Even though we weren't able to run it was a total success, I want to Thank everyone that was involved on getting it setup and running smoothly thoughout the day. Thank you.

PS: Someone should post all the people/business' that donated to raffle, awesome gifts.

Sorry to hear two boats were lost.

Fodigo needs to bring his tug to your next night run.

Do you guys do a Christmas boat parade of lights?

Thanks for all of the great pics Craig.

Actually, they weren't lost - just misplaced.

It was all my fault. The thing is, those of us who are doing the warship combat thing have more enthusiasm than sense. Imagine Halsey's typhoon, only in this imaginary scenario, he knew for certain that he was going to be steaming his fleet into it, just on a whim. That was me, in this case, encouraging my fellow club members to launch into what amounted to a 1:144 scale typhoon, just for fun. And it was my ship (DKM Lutzow - the German pocket battleship in Craig's photos) that went dead in the water after the waves knocked the boilers out (so-to-speak). And the tugboat was launched to push him back to shore before he sank.

The wind (gusting to 60+ mph at times) was pushing Lutzown across the lake to the far shore, which would have been a good thing, but meanwhile, the onboard bilge pump was simply getting overwhelmed by the whitecaps pouring across the deck and down the barbettes, and he sank 20 feet from the far shore. I didn't see the tugboat sink, but the tug's skipper had more intestinal fortitude than sense, and he apparently went down in the middle of the lake, attempting to rescue Lutzow.

Eric Bitondo, Western Warship Combat Club man of the hour, was able to retrieve Lutzow, but none of us knew where the tug had gone down, and now the weather was blowing steadily in gale force, with rain being driven horizontally into our faces, and the tug will need to wait for a calmer day before a salvage attempt can be made. (Unless it was done today? Not sure.)

Bottom line is that I owe Eric Bitondo, big time, and also the skipper of the tug (who was he, actually?) I promise to make it up to both of these fine men. Meanwhile, Lutzow is perfectly dry and working, as our combat ships are engineered to be sunk.

Just another great day at the pond!
