Will flying the Slick 42" be any more difficult than the Slick 51"?


I guess what I'm asking is does flying any 41" plane is more (or less?) difficult than flying a bigger version of the same plane?

I've been meaning to get a Slick, and already got some 4S batteries and the right motor to put on the 51". Getting the 41" will require purchasing a new motor and batteries, which I rather not do. I know there's difference in the planes cost as well, but not as much.

So how would be a 51" compared to a 41"?

The 42" is just as stable in high alpha flight as the 51" is and they have the exact same flight characteristics and both fly just as awesome as the other. The 42" reacts a little quicker to radio inputs. If you can fly one, you can fly the other, one is not more difficult than the other. The 42" is literally a shrunken 51".

One thing to note when going from a small plane to a larger one or visa versa.

If you are used to a smaller plane, then a larger one will feel somewhat "sluggish" at first.

If going from a larger one to a smaller one, the smaller one will feel very quick in comparison.

I must be the oddball here, but I like the 42" Slick better than the 51". I think the big Slick is too nice, so maybe I like the little one because I don't have to care about it and can thrash the crap out of it guiltlessly.

But hey, if you already have the motor and batteries, the big Slick is awesome and it's not hard to fly either.

Absolutely excellent observation. I think in generaly this is why I liike the 47" planes. There are just the right amount of agile for me, but that's a personal thing. I love the big planes too, but I an most comfortable thrashing the 47s".

I bought and flew the 42" first, and realized I had to have the 51". When I flew the 51" for the first time everything was in super slow motion, not quite sluggish, just dreamlike. Then when I revisited the 42" I was sluggish, and the 42" was super fast.
They are both fantastic planes as the airframe is just brilliant. I think the 51" is way easier to fly today. yesterday I thought the 42" was easier. Either way you can't go wrong.

Wow that doesn't really help at all......... Does it?

I have both the 51 and the 42, the 51 seems more stable to me and is a bit slower like other have said. I think though with the 51 you can get more power per oz than with the 42 and not pay a huge weight penalty. Also the 51 does not blow around nearly as bad in a little wind. They are both great to have, but my 51 gets 10 times more flying time than the 42.

Thank you all for the help and info. You really helped me decide which one I should get.
So I'm going for the 51".
Or the 42".

I bought the 42 and then moved on to the 51. Like others have said, everything will happen a little slower with the 51. Depending how high you are, you will have more time to react. I learned so much with the 51. I highly recommend it. The 42 is fun too
