Build Log

Supermarine 381 Seagull

This summer is really hot, so I decided to build my first waterplane. The plan came from Traplet together with canopy. Hope to finish it this summer

Here are the pics from Day 1

Hello Hortid,

That looks very nice, good to see a traditional build from wood of the Seagull, you look set to enjoy your summer, good luck with the remainder of the build and thanks for sharing your cool pictures, cheers,

regards Al

Some progress

Thanks guys!

I made some progress on fuselage, tail and pylon. My impression is that I'm building several planes in one time. Two-piece fuselage and pylon, 3 rudders. But anyway - I enjoy it.

Keep me pushing - and I'll make the maiden flight this summer.

Best regards,

David

Nice work.

For those of us (self included) who are not familiar with the "381" Seagull, here is a helpful pic:

Guys, Thanks for your support . Some details about the plane are here:

Joe: Good question. I think there are 3 reasons:

1. I do not have any seaplane in my fleet
2. This Seagull is so unknown and unusual. I was hooked on the first spot
3. Third reason could be Lockheed Super Constellation. In my opinion most beautiful airliner of all times. Also has three rudders :-)

Hi Airboatflyingshp,

Thanks for the link & hope the problems with life is over. What about your Seagull?

I am making some progress - grinding the wings and finishing the tail. I will post some pics later on today.

I am about to start to cover the wings, but still hesitating whether to use some Litespan or classic paper.

Kestrel: Maiden flight was sometimes in summer 2010. Seagull flies well - just like a trainer of similar size. Side floats could be slightly bigger for better characteristics during windy days.

I was dissapointed by horrible plan quality. Inacurracies on the plan are too big for such a small plane. I throw the plan out somewhere in the phase shown on last photos and rather finished it with a blueprint downloaded somewhere from net.

Therefore I cannot recommend this construction based on that plan to beginners or modellers who would like to enjoy the built. Also the construction techniques proposed by the plan are rather questionable then proven...

I will upload some vids and place a link here. I stopped making the pics once I realized that somebody is selling - softly say - a work with defects
