Mountain Models J-3 Cub 1/9 Scale

Does anyone have any input about this small kit? I did some quick RCGroup searches and can't find very much talk about this kit. From what I read on the MM site it looks like a good way to quickly build a fun to fly scale looking cub. I have a friend with a full size one and would like a quick build to emulate his.

Thanks,
Palmettoflyer, here's a link to my original beta build thread.
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=566024 The thread has about 565 posts in it. There is also an extensive thread on wattflyer.com by texasclouds, I think, on his.

The model, like most MM kits, builds quickly and nicely. It is nice and light, and will fly well on a cheap, small brushless power system. There is also a clipped wing version if you fancy something a little more aerobatic than the basic J-3. I have a CW version sitting here I need to build soon.

Thanks Mark,
That is just what I was hoping to find. My searches didn't go back quite that far.

I built a clipped wing version several years ago. I finished it in red and white sunburst on top and sides, and checkers on the wing bottom.

It's a sweet little plane.

Like all MM/Laser Arts kits, it went together fast and neat.

Be sure to take care as to the wing strut mounting eyelet orientation...the manual and the drawing contradict one another. the drawing is correct.

also, I had trouble with the lower 1" of rudder breaking from tailwheel stress. beef up this area or it will break after several tough landings. i'd sheet that area with some thin thin plywood if I did another. currently, it has tyvak glued to it (bathed in thin CA) and mine is holding fine after the initial break.

mine has flown great as light as 16 oz and as heavy as 22 oz. if you want aerobatics, you need power/speed.

would this be a good "first build" kit? can the full wing and clipped wing kits be interchanged on the same fuselage?

a) with care, yes. it would be doable. the full drawings and instructions should be sufficient. if you start a build thread...people will chime in with answers as needed.

b) yes, I have 1 fuselage and 2 wings myself.

If you've never CA-glued balsa or used iron-on covering...it might be wise to start with a simpler deign. That way when you build the scale plane it looks better. Either way, the builder usually is the only one that notices the little mistakes. And in the air...can't see the details anyhow.

My build thread might help ya: http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50999
