Hello guys once again,
Really sorry for my late posts. Probably I solved my aileron problem. A couple days ago, probably the last sunny and warm Sunday here in Moscow we made the maiden flight of my beauty. It was great and did not have any trouble... Only the landing part was little bit rough but at the end everything was fine. You can watch the video from below link;
Only I have one question and need your help; this baby is around 4.3 kg (~10 lbs) and I am using saito 125 engine. The nose of the plane is so heavy and thats why I put additional weight of 125gr to the tail and I am still around 1cm further towards to LE of CG. Last night I re-checked the CG with GP CG machine and find out additional 80gr more I need to reach advised CG point. I am sure all its because of the saito 125 due to its heavy weight. Is there anything I can do rather than adding extra lead weight to the tail section? (I already changed the place of the battery more back) Best regards, Ozgur |

Ozgur. Hot landing over there. Do you have enough flaps for landing in that short field? I dialed in more flaps than the manual calls for so it would slow it down more on approach. The engine that you have (saito 125) is not that much heavier than the OS91FS that was recommended in the manual. A little nose heavy is ok. Mine balances at about 1/2" forward of the recommended 5 5/8". I have about an ounce of weight at the tail. By the way, I am using an OS 120FS III for power which is about 33oz. What prop are you using in that saito 125?

ton2di, to be honest there were no flaps... Due to maiden flight excitement, we forget to open the flaps! I was using Master Airscrew 16x6 K Series Propeller and Byron Fuel 10% nitro. What I don't understand Saito 125 is around 21.87oz, which means 11oz lighter than your OS 120FS III and still I have to add 2.82oz to the total of additional weight of 2.64oz just to catch the manuals CG 5 5/8". Because our current CGs are almost the same 1/2" forward to the recommended one!!! So strange?? We have so short and rough runway to land and I have to slow down that nose heavy baby as quickly as possible.

The flaps make a big difference in landing speed. I repeat... use it so it would not strain the main wheels when speed drops. I have my receiver battery all the way aft as well as the fuel tank almost in the middle of the plane to get to that c.g. setting. My engine has a pump so I could do that to the fuel tank. Good luck on your next flights. I will try to upload a video of my flight and landing in our field.

Dear ton2di,
I am sure I will use flaps for the next flights. Thank you very much for the photo and the idea especially for the battery all the way aft. I am going to do that. Can you also give me little bit more info about shifting the fuel tank and using a pump, photo will be appreciated. What kind of pump is this? How can I install it to my plane? I am using stock retract system, for this winter I decide to use skis and ordered from tower hobbies some ski for .60 size planes. I hope it will work. For the following spring I am planning to order CJ pneumatic retract system special to our planes. What do you think? I read a lot from rcuniverse about the retract system and confused little bit, some advise robart, some CJ and some sierra. Ozgur |

Well, I will try to post some pics of the fuel tank set up. It's located under the tray that is supposed to be for the receiver and battery location on the manual. It makes the shift from a full to almost empty tank less noticeable on the trim of the plane. The pump is stock on the OS120FSIII, but I have successfully tried a perry vp-20 on my saito 125... just have to make some minor adjustments on the needle to make it work well.
Regarding the retracts, I have no problems with mine. What I added are the oleo struts from robarts that dampen landings so it wouldn't hurt the wings a lot on not so good touch downs. Air retracts just add weight and complexity to the set up. If you want to try it, some are switching to electric retracts that are plugged into one channel. I'm ok with the mechanical ones though. On the prop selection, if you're gonna fly on a more open space, you could try a 15x8. It would give it more speed while having the same load as a 16x6. I personally use an apc 14x10 or 14x12N and it makes some wonders... take some time to get into momentum, but the speed is great... landings are another story. |

Dear ton2di,
Yesterday I ordered "60-120 Class Offset Oleo Struts for P51 Mustang" from rcskylite. Forgive my ignorantness but; when they call it oleo struts, is that means a working, functional oleo struts? So can we say that it has a real functional shock absorber which will reduce the bouncing and help my landings? Or, the only benefit is preventing the damage on retracts, and maybe makes the plane more bouncy? Also in its specifications saying that "Total Length: 160mm", meanwhile the "Landing Gear Struts for the Top Flite P-51D Mustang" is 7-3/8" (187.3mm), will that be ok and how should I install oleo struts instead of the stock ones? Beside I also order 3 1/4" low bouncy rubber scale tires from Dubro, but they are way too heavy comparing the stock ones (46gr vs. 125gr) even at present I am dealing with nose heavy problem. I hope i done the right thing. Ozgur |

Spinner fit
I'm also on the build of this model. I have one question to the fit of the spinner its not a good fit ,its able to be moved up and down on the crankshaft. The motor that I'm using is a 125 saito. are they all like that. Yours Paul T

The oleo struts help those not so good landings absorb most of the shock. I can actually see my struts working even while taxiing. It moves up/down little bit so my plane does not bounce all over even on our grass field. The length of the new oleo will be shorter than the original strut because you have to cut the original strut to insert the new one so make sure it's the same length overall like the original when installed. I also have the heavier type tires on mine. Just make sure to add flaps on landing and it will slow the plane down on approach. Paul timms, The spinner comes with different types of adapter bushing for different engines. Make sure you insert it to the back plate of the spinner. |

Top-Flite P-51 ARF with 1.08 nitro
Looks good....Nice to see a YOU-Tube Video of the TF P-51. Just got the Top-Flite ARF with a 1.08 nitro motor in it, some servoes in the wings, but still needs lots of work to get it in the air. I just got the LG servo in and hope to have it ready to fly by the end of November. It was -4*C last night, but the days may get up to 10*C for a bit yet. May have to wait for Spring to get in the Maiden flight.
I have been flying a Hangar 9 P-51 PTS all summer with 20+ flights, and only one dead stick landing in the corn field.(no damage) After 1/2 hour of searching, in thick 3 meter high corn, it was hung up on the LG, still 1 meter off the ground. (like the RED tail) ImagesView all Images in thread

Wow! Amazing what can happen in a few few months! I havent flown mine as much as I have wanted to but I have flown it. It's been an awesome plane!!
I got the bug a couple of weeks ago and converted it to electric. Haven't had a chance to fly it since then but its looking to be a beast! |
