X5J July 10th/11th Sign-up

Welcome back for a seventh year to X5J eXtreme.

Contest Schedule for 2010

Aug 28th/29th
Sept 11th/12th
Oct 23rd/24th

To enter, please post to this thread your ship and power train information, before the days of the contest. During the day of the contest post your scores.
You may fly any or all of the classes below. In general, all classes use flight time - motor time and up to 30 points for landing.

The goal has been to minimize the rules to stress a Unlimited nature for these events, so everyone with an electric sailplane will have an airframe and motor that will meet the rule requirements.

New rules for X5J eXtreme 2010
TASK: Fly three 10minutes rounds using only thermal updrafts with an electric motor powered sailplane.

X5J eXtreme UNLIMITED rules:
1. Any airframe, motor, battery, ESC, and prop maybe used.
2. Flight time has motor run time subtracted from it.
3. 30point landing tape, in 1 meter increments worth 3pts/m

X5J eXtreme SOR rules:

1. Any airframe, battery, ESC, prop, motor with 28mm diameter and 17mm
magnet bell length or less.
2. Flight time has motor run time subtracted from it.
3. 30 point landing tape, in 1 meter increments worth 3 pts/m.

X5J eXtreme AMERICA

1. Any motor, prop, ESC, 2.0kg or greater airframe, four A123batteries,
2. Flight time has motor run time subtracted from it.
3. 30point landing tape, in 1 meter increments worth 3pts/m

X5J Energy Limited, if you would like to try this format, calculate your total allowed motor time by
using the following formula: 12000/______watts = motor time in seconds. All the rules are still the
same you just do not exceed the calculated motor time for any round. Also if using this format list
your score with the letters EL (i.e. 1723EL)

General Rules:

1. Any part of the airframe maybe used to determine max. landing points.
2. Round motor and flight times to closest second.
3. Motor must be running at launch.
4. Each second of flight time is one point, seconds greater than 10minutes are subtracted.
5. First and additional motor runs, one point per second, loss of landing points on second motor run.

Hope you can joins us for the fun.

The Best Soaring

Hello Robert,
I hope to make it this time. I will be flying my HiAspect again, Hacker B40/9L+4.4:1+15x10+3SXP3600. Let's hope the planets align and allow me to get my flights off.
Best Regards,
-Eric

I will be able to fly in the July event. As usual, I'll fly an Art Hobby e-sailplane in the range from 1.9 - 2.5 M. I'll most likely fly my 2M Andromeda, unless it is very windy. All of these planes have a direct-drive, brushless inrunner power system driven by a 3S lipo pack, and thus come-in under the “unlimited” category.

Here are my scores:

1. 9:59, motor 20 second (2x), no landing points = 579
2. 9:56, motor 23 (1x), no landing points = 573
3. 9:59, motor 31 (2x), no landing points = 568

Total 1720 points

I did fly the AH Castor, motor Axi 2814/10, prop 9.5x5, 2S2200, 180 W, 1100 grams. As they forecast 35 ░C for today I went to the field early. With this low power setup I tried to start directly into thermals that were, however, weak and shortlasting. In the first and third flight I had to restart, in the second one I did not make it back to the point - about 12 m.

So, my worst score in X5J this year but much more fun than to shoot up into 300 m and then fall down (however, I would never even try this approach at the "assembly" contest ).

Thanks Robert for the opportunity to fly,
Jan

Hard to find lift today. It sure looked like a good day for soaring, but it was not.
here are a few photos of Bob's Trio.

Here are my scores for the July 2010 X5J Unlimited:

Flight 1: 600 - 17 (motor run) + 27 (landing) = 610

Flight 2: 600 - 2 sec (over time) - 17 (motor run) + 30 (landing) = 611

Flight 3: 600 - 29 (motor run) + 0 (landing) = 571

TOTAL POINTS: 1,792

=================================================
Some details for those interested:

Plane: Art Hobby Andromeda 2 M (SD7080 wing). Mega 16/15/5 direct drive to a 9 x 5 prop powered by a 3S 1800 lipo pack. AUW 25.4 oz (720 g).

Flights occurred earlier today (Saturday) between 11:30 and 12:45. Weather: 6 mph (10 kph) N/NE, 83 F (28 C), mostly clear. A nice day for July.

Flight 1: Made time using careful flying and three fairly weak thermals.

Flights 2: Hit decent lift early, and made time easily.

Flight 3: After a couple of minutes, the entire reachable sky turned to light-
moderate sink, and that was that for landing points!

Best to all,

FF

That was also my experience down here in my corner of Indiana. Looked good all afternoon, but decent lift was sparse. Still, I did see a few very high-flying vultures, so there was apparently big lift out there somewhere....

Nice job FF....real close to the 1800 threshold!
It may hold up.
