How high is it when a 16' glider is just a speck? Been there, done that once. Would prefer not to do it again.
We never thought we'd get it down, but soehow a few hours later we did.

I have Radian with a spektrum ar500 receiver. I don't even think I could see it at 2600 feet. I have a tough time seeing it at 500 feet.

What type of receiver are you using and what do you think the max range is for your receiver?

I am using an AR500 rx in the the radian. Max range appears to be a lot farther than I am comfortable flying. Other than that I don't have any idea. Have you had an altimeter in your radian ? You might surprise yourself how high you actually are.

How do you fly a spec ?

I was just wondering how you cross country guys manage to keep on flying a spec.

When my 3 meter plane is nearly a spec I get really scared and start trying to bring it down. The spec may disappear and I find it really depressing to lose a fine thermal machine.

When you can no longer discern direction how do you keep flying ?

It depends a lot on the air that day. On a clear day you can see a 13" root to about 1800m. On a hazy day the visibility may be as low as 1200m. At high altitudes we keep the plane directly overhead and have two people watching it. Usually the tail has disappeared but they are set up stable so they will track unattended. Sometimes you just have to trust that it is still going the way you want. On occasion it is necessary to spiral down because the plane has reached the visibility limit but is still going up. Color is very important to visibility.
