Cars. People are a CLOSE second, with people with cars leading the pack.

(This freakin' fan belt will NOT go on like it is supposed to. Doesn't matter which pulley I try to put it on last.)

lol... Believe it or not, I had a screwdriver trying to lever the belt onto the alternator pulley. But not while it was running!

I wonder if I can drive it 7 blocks to a mechanic's on the battery power and without it overheating?

NightOwl,
Greetings. Is there a tensioner pulley? If so, there usually is a square hole for a 1/2 inch drive socket wrench. Insert the drive and use it to relieve tension whilst fitting the belt.

Kirk (and I'm pretty sure you can make it the 7 blocks okay) out

I don't know about a half-inch drive socket (can't get a good look at it; it's a transverse mounted engine with the belt about 1-1/2 inches from the wheel well wall), but I can pull the tensioner pulley down with a 5/8" box wrench. It just doesn't relax far enough. If the stupid belt was a 1/2 inch longer, it'd slip right on. Now I'm wondering if the web site was right about which part number the belt for the Chevy is. I didn't put on a new belt when I replaced the alternator, and I'm sure the old one was probably stretched just a tiny, tiny bit, but it was nothing like trying to get this one on today.

Maybe I'll check a couple of other web sites and see if I got the wrong belt, somehow. (There are only 2 versions of the S-belt for this model Chevy engine. One with A/C and one without, and I got the one to go with A/C, so I know it was longer than the other would have been.)

Edited to add: Nope. Everything matches. More than one place says this is the right belt. The only thing I could be off on is if this was a dealer-installed A/C unit, instead of factory installed (which has a different belt for some unknown reason; I have no idea why it would matter who bolted the AC condenser to the block).

cars!
