Here is a conversion spreadsheet that I wrote. It converts all kinds of metric goodies....servo torque, mm, density, volume, grams/meter to oz./yard etc...

Johann, its them that must keep it, the imperialists. We, the metrics, are the ones that are the correct standard!!.........

Don't be a defeatist...

The going is slow down here!
I have however finally got a wing set cut,
and the 1st layer of glass over the plug.
Let's see if bagging can happen soooon!

Steve...
How soft is your wing with 50g glass?
I might beef it up to 86g

It's pretty soft, the wing is surprisingly stiff (particularly for its application)but can be dented/dinged quite easily... having said that, it tends not to happen during flying as the tougher leading edge takes the knocks. I've stuffed mine in a few times now and the only wing dents etc have come from handling and hanger rash... its plenty strong enough tho, I'd build another tomorrow if my current one went pop.

Your layup all depends on what kind of flying you want from it really.

I wouldnt have thought even a 100g cloth (tight weave) would give you that much of a weight penalty, jumping from my 180g to around say 230-240g's?... it would still rock... seems to rock at any weight I've tried ... that weight would defo kill any flat field thermal options tho.

The plug has been sanded down, and now we just need some more glass ..
I'll start the wings tonight...

first wing half in the bag...

yuck... I havent done that in a while, still end up with epoxy all over the place. I did .75oz veil then 3.7oz satin cloth (123g?), then some strips of carbon tow. I did 3.7oz/1.7oz kevlar composite cloth on the LE. Given what y'all are saying, it'll be a heavy wing, comparatively.

I painted up some mylars last night with rattlecan, and tonight got the one half in the bag. I sort of did an alulaish profile to the wing, for fun.

I'm doing this as a trial wing, to be sacrificed in the plug for the wing seat.

I'll post some pics after I pull it out tomorrow night.

Nice looking plug Johann...

Yet more glassing on the granite worktop!?

I'm looking forward to seeing how you get all the little curves sanded and polished, no power sanders or buffers on this one

Sound like you're in Doc...
Boots and all!
My wife's camera.. (soon to be mine..)
Is also covered in resin!
Fingers I can still clean!
It is rather messy...

I'm also going for a heavier wing layup.
I'll try..
2x 86g layers over the leading edge, wing tips and center section
2x 86g (1x 45 deg) over the whole surface..
Peel ply and extra layer 86g over the ailerons ( Live hinge)
I decided to stretch the wing slightly so that I can round the tips and sand some washout at the tip.

I hauled out my Alula, and I must say...
It's suspiciously looking like a twin
I also love the wing plan form...
Sooo...
I may do the same Doc!
Sleedo's plane looked similar and flew beautifully!

I was so proud of you for staying almost on thread and infact adding to the design.... then you go and start messing with the plan form and adding crazy things like washout...... WASHOUT!!! curving the tips loads after hot wiring?! whats going to happen to your wing section?! there wont be one thats what!

Looks like I need me a new promoter, this ones shoddy

You're perceptive...
That's in our family room,
And yes, I had to replace the previous top because I messed cyno and epoxy all over..
I'm banned from using glue or epoxy there..
(But... they were all sleeping)

It's all by hand anyway!

Don't worry!
I'm your man!
I'm just doodling..
I know, these other wizards that I associate with....
They ain't going to do anything!
sooo.. If I have to bag 6 sets..
They're all going to be different!
(thats why they need to be interchangeable)
Also..
I need to learn how to bag properly!
I've only done test wings so far!

washout...

why that anyway.... I've never really understood it.

Johann how 'bout putting the washout in your tip template? Profili will do it (IIRC). That way you get reproducibility.

I'm just gonna do the tape hinge to start.

Neither do I...
Perhaps washout's not the correct term..
I even got Steve excited!
All I really did was sand the bottom edge to get away from the thick edge that develops when you cut the profile round on the wing tips..

I did stretch the wing by 30 mm both sides..
In case I have to lob it off!
