5mm...

well... no time for an answer... baby's sleeping!

I made it 5mm dihedral.

I may be able to cut some foam by the end of the night.

I'm thinking make a finished wing, then start to make some kind of a plug to mate up with it.

Any suggestions for a decent layup schedule for my first attempt?

I'm thinking .75glass then 5.6glass bias, then some strips of unicarbon for reinforcement a la DLG, running spanwise. Maybe some 3oz glass/kevlar composite cloth for the LE strip.

Sound good?

keeping going...

(seeing Toy Story 3 with the big kids this evening)

A quick slapped together vid of yesterdays Sally action to give you an idea of how the lighter versions go in light air, you can see by the grass in the vid that theres not alot of wind

A morning with Sally (3 min 19 sec)

With not alot of wind out yet glorious sunshine I thought I'd go out and give my light glass Sally another chance at flat field and it seems had judged it too quickly

Within a few throws I had her dialled in and getting decent height of a good side arm launch, I didnt get any major height thermals but she was definitely working what was there... well chuffed

With the extra weight of this one and the extra oomph needed in the launch the fin quickly became loose, I'll need to glue that on alot better.

I also tested this light glass durability, the RX glitched while turning low downwind for a catch and sent her in pretty hard... not a scratch on her, the 200g glass LE seems to be doing the job.

Good stuff!

Hey Steve
You may have told me before...
What was the weight of carbon Sally?
And how was that made up ...
Pod, tail, wings and gear??
Just trying to get a handle on comparative weights..

I'll give you the make up of the two Sallys I have at present...

Carbon Sally:-

400g's AUW
Wing - 200gsm twill weave carbon, same on the LE
pod - 300gsm plan weave carbon (lost foam).
Fin - Carbon Tow from the 300g carbon cloth and 50g glass finishing layer.
Ply wood keel.

Leccy Gear was 2 x E-power 12g metal gear digi servos, 500mah 2s lipo, cheapo 10amp ESC and a Corona RX.

Glass Sally:-

180g's AUW
Wing - 50g glass with a 200g glass LE and a few carbon tows from the 300g carbon top and bottom.
Pod - a few layers of 200g glass with a 200g carbon bandage to stiffen up where I split the pod.
Fin - 6mm depron with 0.5 carbon strips.
Balsa keel.

Leccy gear was 2 x e-power 8g digi servos, 1s 450mah lipo and 4ch corona synth RX.

Need anything else? You may want to stick these details along with the above video onto the opening post, will give people quick access to all the shizzle without havign to trawl throuh the thread.

On another note

I'm really gee'd on by todays thermal action, I might have to do a quick build with a slightly bigger span and see whats what.... So much stacking up to get done not enough time

Firstly, we will be spawning about six of these babies...
We intend to take them to a fly-in event to be held in Hermanus in October/ November.

Hey Johann;
I'll see you are planning already for Hermanus. How about getting all the gang together and have a good old “chinwag” regarding Hermanus and Hermanus plans.
We can have it at my place anytime.

Hi Markus
Yep
Hermanus...
You know what happened last year!
The problem with group efforts...
Every one tugs in different directions and propose planes with differing capabilities.
Sooo..
That's why I do my own thing, and if you want to join in, That's great!
To a large degree, I'm doing this because I like the qualities of the SAL, and because I want to!
I'm also enjoying the glassing process..
So far!

My lay-up will differ from Steve's in that I'll cast a fuselage. IE the pod, fuz and tail will all be in one. The Idea is to be able to slot in different wings depending on conditions...
Time will tell if this is wise, but so far it's looking promising!

I have half shaped the fuz so far, but need to get a wing bagged to enable me to seat the root in the Fuz.
The scale of the build is also much more manageable. The molding of the fuz is still a bit of a process, but should be done without to much hassle!

You guys are welcome to check out the 1st results, and then if you want to, can decide then if it is appropriate.
You may even learn some glassing skills!
