Electrolyte micro sport jet (the original thread)

I have been dreaming of a 30-40mm Micro Sport jet with a fiberglass fuselage and ducting for some time. Mcross and Nitrocharged have already demonstrated that 30mm EDF systems can provide enough power for high performance so finally its time to build a an equally capable jet-like airframe. I love scale but decided a sport scale fuselage would be best for a small jet designed for performance and precision flying. The plug is well underway and so far it captures the look I was hoping for. I can't wait to get this fuse molded

I don't want to land yet!
That looks a lot like the Super Bandit pdawg... should be a nice flyer!

Yep, this fuse also looks a lot like an Ultra Viper, Aggressor III, and an Electra. This sport jet fuse however only has a 20" wingspan so the eventual composite fuselage will be unique in a small way.

Should be very cool so I hope you give it it's own name, xomething fitting to the small scale and fast looks. Too bad the name 'Swallow' is so used before 'cause it looks sort of like those fast, manuverable, small birds that fly 'jet fast'!

Looks to be a lot of work to make a mold and all. Did you test a small foamy mock-up? Probably don't need to cause it looks like it will fly great. I'd guess that you need good access to the fan unit because the impeller on that 30mm might come loose from time to time.

(take that back that sure looks like an outrunner in there with a screw holding the impeller on! Where did you get that! Or is that a 40mm?????????????)

Subscribed and good luck!

I'm pretty sure that impeller won't go anywhere Fred....

Nice Stuff pdawg! Looks like it's going fast just sitting there.

I'm guessing that the EDF set up has something to do with NitroCharged Skunk Works!

Awesome work

I attempted this a few years ago for 40mm but could never get a light enough layup for the power available.

Good luck,

Fred,

Fuselage access is very important to the ease of construction. The plan is for this fiberglass fuselage to have a cockpit hatch for the lipos and access to the fan and servos through the main wingsaddle and the saddle for the horizontal stab. These openings will also make the layup easier. Today the canopy was completed, the fuselage was spackled and is now ready for fiberglass. Hopefully it will get some primer by the weekend .

Devmonkey,
Your fuse looks nice and will likely work with todays systems. It was probably a little ahead of its time. What is the fuselage length?

I always get a nasty cough when I sand balsa...

Looking forward to the lay-up pdawg. She looks nice

Joe, maybe it's time to resurrect the project?

pdawg, looks good hope you show the mold being made. I do some glass work but it's always a pain in the back!

Joe, I agree power setups have come a long way! How heavy was it anyway!

Steve,
Glad you found your way here! The balsa was making me sneeze also so I started glassing it to trap the dust. I definitely would appreciate your thoughts about the ducting on such a small EDF.

Fred,
Making composite parts is not difficult once you have a proven method. I was fortunate to have been taught composites by David Bridi (son of Joe Bridi) back when giant scale air racing at Madera was popular. That experience changed the way I build models. Once you have the mold its like all your hard work is preserved, even if the prototype crashes. I will do my best to document the process and answer any questions.

Well you're making me want to get back to a couple of small projects.

After your plane is all done and flying, don't be afraid to try turbulators inside the inlet ducts. That's one thing I've tried on a small inlet and it worked. I think the small stuff can get separated flow very easily, so if it's divergent at all, this can be a real help.

Otherwise, I've always liked to keep the fan more in the middle of ducting than some others. I know there's a bunch of planes with the fan sitting in the trunk, but I think best to have a reasonable thrust tube on it to get air flow accelerated as much as possible and perhaps even smooth it out a bit after it's gone by the motor/stators.
