Very clever. I have concerns that it's a little short at the front end, too heavy, and not very streamlined. Non of these are deal breakers.
The too heavy thing, ANYTHING added to a Champ is VERY heavy. Champ is NOT an overpowered plane. It's gonna make it handle a little twitchy and porky. It'll probably fly but not handle like a normal Champ. But the intent is to ROW so weight is not a deal breaker if it can be made to fly at all. Do you have experience flying off water? If yes you already know the inherent difficulties. Could you please show another pic with the plane floating? It'd be good to see that the angle at rest is OK and it floats high enough. The issue with the not-very-streamlined effect is drag in the water. It'll be harder to get up to flying speed. The issue with the front end length is that floats usually reach out about as far a a little past the prop. The intent is to discourage the plane from pitching forward by drag, rough landing, swells, or dipping a wingtip in the water. It'll work if you hold it level enough while accelerating to flight speed. Worst case if it won't ROW is to hand launch. Can still land and taxi. on water. |

jbarchuk, I'm very happy you jumped in. I have no knowledge of water landing/takeoff of any aircraft but, I did notice that some modification was needed but, not quite sure..
blindseal, Listen to these Guys,,..they are good Mike. |

If you've seen the vids you know about as much as I do given my limited float experience. For sure, do hand toss first. Try to land at as low speed as possible, on grass if possible, to not overstress the LG. Off water, the usual, full elevator to hold the nose up for taxiing. Accelerate (wait for it) and at the same time release elevator gently. At flying speed Champ should pull off the water even with the extra load. |

What is "rowing."? See I told you I didn't know anything about water take off/landing

If you want to melt your brain the mathematics for the various calculations is fascinating. ROG requires all the things like airfoil, lift coefficient, weight, speed wind etc... ROW has more of a component for surface resistance - depending on the floats - size shape etc... I was going to post some of the figures in here but have only just regained consciousness after delving into it all. Trial and error will work for me. |
