Not contesting the concept that the Champ is great as a straight 3-channel

I love mine, and intend to keep flying it until it "is no more". It has the great advantage of going to the cricket oval 1 min from home, whenever the wind and my fancy allows.

My reason for looking at this, is exactly that......... I've also moved up to a larger plane (4-channel) and fly at club w/e's. By upgrading Champ, I want to avoid my "dumb thumb" moments, by having BOTH as 4-channel.

If you have a computerized Tx, you can leave the Champ 3 channel and set up the mix to simulate this if that's the main reason you want to do this.

I was expecting worse!

I'll bet it wouldn't look too bad if you added some windows and details, maybe some white stripes.

I imagine if you kept it in light coats, yes. You should try to get the weight of your champ right now with all the paint on it to see how much you put on.

Before someone breaks out the Spray cans and Masking tape, be aware over 75% of the paint will be beind the CG, so additional nose weight will need to be added (the double whammy of a color change).

So remove old paint before you add new paint.

One of my Champ's wheels popped off while I was taxiing and I lost the black 'collet' that holds it in place.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what I could use as a replacement?
