Something about the gas tank. If they were hit in the rear there was a good chance they would burn.

They did a mean emergency brake death slide on old dirt country roads! Whew! The fun we had. Once while coming from a drunken beach trip I headed off road to pull the emergency brake thing. Got up to speed in the Pinto SW and yanked the brake. Forgot about the huge cooler full of mostly melted ice and water behind the back seat. A wave of ice cold wake the he!! up crested over the rear seat and splashed everything all the way to the windshield.

No fires and if I'm not mistaken my Pop's neighbor bought it when he purchased his new Datsun/Nissan (First year w/Nissan name) Stanza. Still running as far as I know

The Pinto wagon did not have the fireball issue and made an awesome beach car. With the rear seat folded forward the cargo area was just long enough.

I didn't watch the vid but followed the progress of this venture when it was going on. Ended not so well due to either a broken strut or weld in that area.

Did have a ton of fun in Pintos though. Had a Vega too. Cool car except you couldn't keep a windshield in one.

A good buddy in high school had one of these, only with a black interior. We called it the Moon Buggy.

My 1st car was a 1974 Pinto wagon.

There's one with the porthole side window nearby for sale that's painted all black with "Tar Baby" in big gold letters on the rear sides....that'd make a great car for cruising the Hood.

Interesting, i wasnt aware of the efforts made AVE to build a flying car... then again its before my time. Did a bit of googling and found this site, some good info on the history of development for the AVE mizar.

The aerocar was a sucsessfull attempt at such a thing, however the aerocar was developed to be a plane, not a car turned into a plane so it might have been a bit better designed... i saw one once at an airshow some 15+ years ago, a novel concept it was.

Aerocar nextgen?

I like the concept of the flying car. More novelty than useful.

How about a Mini Cooper flying car?
