Sr X-250 and Speed 480 question

My dad has the X-250 with the standard recommended power system and is looking for a little more power. I know some have upgraded to a speed 480 with great success. What is involved in replacing the standard 7.2V speed 400 with a speed 480? Is it a drop in replacement in the gearbox or do you have to deal with other pinion gears etc? Also what prop do you recommend with the speed 480? Still the 9x5 slim e props?

Thanks in advance.

The 480 that Dymond has will drop right in. You can use the same prop of play around to see what you like. I was using an Areonaut 9x6 folder on mine. The Graupner 480 is different so it will not fit the gearbox. JohnTracey

What John said. You have to be careful because the designation "speed 480" is used to apply to several quite different motors. The easy "480" upgrade that is just a drop in for the X250 is the motor that is sold by Dymond and Permax (Multiplex) and is just a speed 400 with a slightly longer can. It has a 2.3 mm shaft, like a speed 400. The more sophisticated (and expensive) 480's from Graupner have a bigger shaft (I think 3.2 mm). Since the shaft on the "long can" motor is the same, you just need to pull the pinion off the stock motor and put it on the 480. As John says, then the motor just bolts onto the gear drive with the same screws.
