micro edf

anyone know of any micro size electric ducted fan units, for really small & light jet models? I'm thinking of scratch-building something really small...

Try a quick search, I started a thread called 'EDF under 50g, it can be done...' (or something like that). I discussed various options for building a micro fan and also included some calculations.

I will try and find it and post it later......

Hmm...there is the new GWS unit (50 mm diameter)...Balsa Products will carry it (don't think they have it yet.)

Otherwise you can "roll your own"....that's what I'm doing right now...just don't have any time right now.

Will keep you posted (if I ever finish it )

Was it ever done? I got the impression it turned out undoable.

well, gws just came out with a 1oz ducted fan which puts out 2.5ozs of thrust on 7 cells...

so, 1oz for a 50mah nicad pack or 110mah nimh (pushing the current, i know...) and 1 oz for the fan... say 1/2 oz for the airframe, 1/2 oz for electronics... so ~90 grams auw for a mini edf jet with the gws edf...

sounds pretty good to me... it ain't 50 grams, but 90 grams is pretty sweet...

I saw the astro firefly at the electra fly-in this weekend... looks like it would make a pretty crazy micro-size edf motor with the right blade... I think i'll try it in motocalc...

No I havent built it (yet).......

I'm a bit busy with my 3 fan VTOL X32b at the moment. It can be done I cannot remember anywhere in the thread that I said it couldn't.

I started the thread in the hope that someone would 'have a go' as I said earlier all my free time is taken up with the X32b....

Maybe next year........

I've seen a VTOL IC harrier which can nearly takeoff vertically, but it has 2 nozzles. Other than that the only scale'ish electric I've heard off is a harrier but its cells are not flown and the model has an umbilical to provide power.
