The BD-5 ---edf 70mm


As it is not finished yet it should be here in its own build log.
it is not a tested way of building but i like to go to the edges, to see how far we can push things.
we have minimized the thicknes of the foam core to 6 mm ( less than 1/4 ") and it looks ok even to work with but with one limitation.. one have to have the glass inside before sanding the outside to finished shape.
the foam we have used is 4 inch thick, and a template at each side to cut it
cutting is started with biggest outside first and smallest inside ... then the "chease cutter" to correct the "difference" working out from the middle to the edge.
our 14 days of work acivement.

todays installation of the ducting and the fan unit.


having all the parts done there was only to put it in the plane with glue for the final placement. It worked out pretty well and simple.

Hi Claus,
What weight cloth are you using on the inside? Are you using epoxy or WBPU to coat the cloth?

I'm interested in trying this technique but too much in the queue right now to get to it.

I am now using 49gr/m2 ( 0.16oz/feet2)
i have tried the wbpu but it is hard to keep in place and the cure time for the real stregth is long, so now i am using airplane grade epoxy, it is a little more sticky and one more thing i cut the pieces into 8 inch wide bands with a " overlap to make it easy to get in place.
a little extra trick is the 3M replaceble spraymount on the fiberglass to hold it in place on hard to do forms.

1/4 " foam thickness is what it takes to make "timber" when it is glassed both sides.
but do not try to sand the outside to shape before the inside glass have hardened.

Nice project Claus.

Your NACA ducts look good. The lip on the back edge can be cut back and rounded more if you need more static thrust. Don't expect miracles though. Mine doesn't do too well until it's flying.

i am well aware of that! My work with the Windrider model of BD-5 have shown to me that there is gain in doing the inlet propper, even only modiffiing the the stock one.

I already thought on previos pics this is a big plane. 70mm fans can have 90mm edf sized jets easely.

Hi Claus!

Does the inner duct walls seal around the motor?

Will the low pressure in the duct pull cooling air through the motor?

no seal to the motor to the inner duct sides.
the way WM 400 is done with cooling of the outside of the motor through the airgab between the housing and the motor, ending right in front off the fan..means suction from through the the not sealed inside "walls" als well as through the motor.
this one is not pure perfect but will work ok.

Claus very interesting 70mm build. I really like the BD5j version. Will there be plans or drawing available for this size aircraft, or even 90mm edf
