Build Log
PCA-2 Pitcairn 60 Size - Beechnut Electric and Champion Nitro
Use this however you like guys. I know the plans are starting to go out and when you get the plans, you might be like me and think...."Where do I start?!" My suggestion is start with the fuse. Is easy and you'll see the progress coming along quickly!
But first.... a parts list. There is a lot of things here guys, and you might decide to use something else you have in the shop, which is fine. Just remember, to keep it light. This list is estimated, so I appreciate any input if you needed to buy more. Feel free to go with different sizes but this might deviate from the plans. Whatever you do...keep that tail light! The basics behind this model is 1/4 balsa and 3/32 ribs....any bigger than that would add unnecessary weight. Enjoy the trip to the store! Balsa and Plywood 6 = 1/8 x 1/4 x 36 inches spruce (for wing spar) 8 = 3/32 x 6 x 36 inches balsa sheet (ribs, side formers, formers on top and wing sheeting) 1 = 1/8 x 6 x 12 inch balsa sheet (wing tips) 4 = 1/4 x 3 x 36 balsa sheet (aileron stock, leading edge of wing, wing saddle) 8 = 1/4 x 1/4 x 36 balsa sticks (fuse and tail sections) 5 = 1/8 x 1/8 x 36 balsa sticks (airfoil on tail sections) 2 = 1/64 x 12 x 24 sheet plywood (top of fuse and around nose) 2 = 1/8 x 1/2 x 36 balsa sticks (for elevator laminations) 8 = 1/16 x 1/4 x 36 balsa sticks (for elevator and rudder laminations) 1 = 1/4 x 6 x 12 birch (hard) plywood (firewall and dihedral braces) 1 = 1/8 x 6 x 12 lite plywood (servo mounts, strut mounts, and mast mounts) 1 = 1/2 x 1/4 x 36 spruce stick (for mast) 1 = 3/8 x 6 x 36 balsa sheet (for balsa rings around nose) 2 = 1/2 x 3 x 36 soft balsa sheet (for underneath fuse and filler) 15 = 3/16 x 3/16 x 36 balsa sticks (stringers for side and top of fuse) Blades: 3 pcs. 1/8" x 3" x 36" 3 pcs. 1/4" x 3" x 36" 3 pcs. 1/8 x 36 wire Hardware 4 = 5/32 wire (landing gear and mast) 6 = steel landing gear straps (for landing gear and struts) Grove landing gear blocks (sig part # SIGSH125 3/8 x 3/4 x 6 inch maple blocks) 1 = 4-40 steel threaded rod ends Dubro #302 (landing gear) 1 = 4-40 steel solder rod ends Dubro #303 (landing gear) 2 = 4x40 rod with threaded ends (landing gear) pull-pull wire (landing gear) 6 = 5/32 wheel colars (mast and landing gear) 6 = 6-32 x 1 inch screws and blindnuts (mast and engine mount) 2 = 2-56 x 1/2 inch screws and blindnuts (landing gear struts) 1 = 3/8 x 12 inch brass tube (landing gear strut and mast mount) 1 = 5 /16 x 12 inch brass tube (landing gear strut) |

Hi Pete,
I had the same question. I believe he means: 1-3/8x4, and 1-3/8x12 ect. I'm still trying to confirm where to send my payment, I can't get these plans fast enough. I don't think I've ever been more excited about a build! -Mike |

I fly primarily off grass, and I'm considering a tailskid like the full scale had. Even on pavement the tailskid(with small strip of rubber) would aid in creating a little drag to keep the taxi speed slow. I've built and flown several WWI birds with tailskids that handled fine on the ground. What's your opinion on that man? On another note: I found a new(to me anyway) wood supplier. They allow you to order the exact number of each piece you want instead of ordering in bulk. The website is easy to use, and the prices are better than others I've found. www.nationalbalsa.com Anybody try these guys yet? |

Joe,
Just had a quick look over the plan, I may be wrong but I think you will need to add the 1/2" balsa to your list for the underside of the fuselage and the wood needed for the blades. Regards Rich |

You guys have the sizes and count for the blades, and the underside of the fuselage? No rush, I haven't got my plans yet(Sheesh joe it's been almost a day and a half since I paid) so I probably won't be building blades for a few more days. I've got all the wood inbound(except that which Rich mentioned), and will order the remaining hardware once I've looked the plans over.

Thanks Rich....changed.
Dave and I decided to have guys add this 1/2 balsa sheet underneath it...very easy and easy to form the bottom. However I went this route: See pictures below. Either way would work. |
