1/4 scale cub as towplane?

Hey guys,

How would a Sig 1/4 scale Cub powered by an O.S. FT 160 Gemini twin do as a towplane? What is the biggest glider in terms of span and weight that it might handle?

You'll probably be able to tow the lighter <4m stuff, up to around 10 pounds, without much drama, but I'll say that if you are intending to do more than the occasional tow session every now and then, it will get spendy rather quickly. We are fortunate enough to tow every week, and our tow pilots can easily log twenty to fifty tows per session, depending on how many tugs are there. That kind of flying time with a big glow adds up a hefty fuel bill quick! Gassers are much more reasonable in that respect.

I had a Sig 1/4 Cub and put a F.P.E 3.2 on the nose swinging a 22/10 prop.

It towed everything up to my 5 meter 22lb Ventes with no problem.

I did upgrade to a bigger towplane (Pegasus 3W-120) because the sailplanes
in the club got bigger.

It was a ball to fly just for fun. I also had the Robart Cub landing gear on it also.

Nathan, I have a Sig 1/4-scale Cub with an O.S. FT 1.60 engine and I agree with Zero-Zero's analysis. It is a great airplane and engine combination for reasonable scale flight, but I don't think it would be that good for serious towing. My 1.60 is turning a 16x6 prop and has about the same power as an older 1.20 single cylinder 4-stroke engine. It is not that hard on glow fuel for its size, but then again, it does not have anywhere near the power output of a single cylinder engine of similar displacement. Here is my trusty Cub, still flying after all of these years (built in 1986):
