New use for Skywalker wings

Friends,

I wanted to share a small success story. These Skywalker wings are VERY versatile and adaptive.

After losing my 2nd Skywalker, I only had a set of wings left; the fuselage was trashed.

Then about two weeks ago, I lost the wings set from my Multiplex Mentor when they flew out of the back of my truck (long story).

Soooooo.....why not join the two together? I had been wanting to put flaps on my Mentor anyway. Last fall I uploaded some pics comparing the two wing sets. The SW wings are very similar and about 1" longer. I used both the nylon bolts from the Mentor and the rubber band method from the SW to attach to the fuselage.

Armed with a new X-acto blade and a little faith, I did some Nip+tuck and Voila...I now have a SW+Mentor hybrid.

I maidened this creation last weekend and it flies remarkably well!

Placement of Vtx

Going through this thread, I don't see anyone putting the Vtx and antenna on the belly of the plane. It is either up front, on the tail or somewhere out on the wing. Is there any particular reason for this apart from the obvious potential for hitting the ground?

Here's why I ask. I have landing gear on my Skywalker that give about 16cm ground clearance and want to mount the Vtx with the rubber duckie pointing straight down. This way the antenna is clear of the electronics and potential RF shadows regardless of my plane's orientation. Any compelling reasons why this would be a bad idea?

You have to be careful when glueing the fuselage halfs together or there will be misalignment problem!

This problem seems to be inherent with the Skywalkers. I was able to overcome this issue on my 2nd and 3rd SW's by placing the fuselage in carpenter's clamps - the large kind about capable of holding materials up to 2' wide.

Their bulk and large handles were such that when I glued the fuse together (with glue still wet), I was able to to "twist" the fuse to the point the front-to-back was perfectly aligned and I then placed them in the clamps: one at the front, and one at the back right at the point where the vertical stab meets the tail.

Waited overnight, and when removed - perfect alignment!

*GROAN*....okay. Traveling back from the fields, I dismantled my wing from the fuse and placed in the truck bed on top of two other foamies: T-28 and a Twinstar. There just wasn't enough room for the Mentor WITH wings on in the truck bed - its a big plane!
I have a 2011 Toyota Tacoma short bed, so I placed bungee cords across the "hard-points" in an X shape. this has worked well before, never had issues....until I got on the interstate going about 80 mph I noticed in my rear-view the wings moving around a bit.

So I slowed down and got in the right lane-----WHOOSH! The wing flew out of the truck in a split second. The last I saw of them was in my rear-view, impaled on the front grill of a Peterbuilt and bursting into pieces.....CRAP!

Oh wait...I have a set of Skywalker wings at home! Hmmmmmm.......

LOL, cheers. I had to google 'Peterbuilt' we dont have those here.
The wing stood no chance.
Nice wing mod though.

The 2nd launch in the video looks nasty or he isn't used to hand launch?

Mine is very easy to launch - by sound It seems he applies a generous doze of throttle early -I almost do the same but I am connected to my FPV gear as well ~2meter cord allows for some movement when wearing goggles

Here is my maiden Skywalker FPV a few months back

Not only is it formation flying, it is from the FUTURE! The date on your video says it was flown on June 18th 2011, does your OSD have a time travel option?
