marblehead hull

Hi Guys,

i have an old marblehead boat, which was made original out of abs plastic.

unfortunately after about 20 years, the boat is getting fragile. and to top it off, it fell of the stand yesterday and cracked the upper hull on one side.. .
so far it is fixable, but it does not look good.

question for you : should i try to attempt of restoring the hull ? ie, cutting it along the boot stripe in 2 halves, laminate the inside , put it back together and re-finnish the outside?
or find a new hull and move all part over to the new hull ?

personally i like the boat and would hate to have to junk the hull...

ohh.. i do not do any competition sailing.. just for fun

what about making a plug out of it and building a completely new boat?

making a plug is a little more, than i would want to do at this time.. it would require a multiple part plug, due to the cockpit area

I too have a Robbe Pirol. The hull material (Called Plura by Robbe) has also gotten a little brittle. I discovered this when I picked up the boat by holding the hatch opening and cracked (in several places) the side of the hull. I re-positioned the cracked areas with tape and epoxied a few layers of glass cloth across the cracks. It worked very well and the hull is as stiff as new. I'm just more careful as to how I carry it. If the outside of the hull is rough when you get finished you can just fill/sand and repaint the area.

This is the repaired hull, fortunately I was able to reposition the several cracks well enough with tape that they really don't show that much (they were on this side). The color in the pictures is a little odd, the boat is yellow and the people are not black and white! The boat actually sails very nicely for its age but the single panel stock sails leave a lot to be desired.
