Cant do.. my Champ has lights on it and wires run down both wings all to the wingtips...

They work fine for me... sure some went crap and some were ruined pretty fast ..but some work pretty fine ... and for the price they are worth trying..

I bought 3 Hyperions G-3 in the past.. (5 counting RCbabel 240s) .. all 3 160s went fubar withoin months of carefull use...

After shaping them enough to where I liked how they looked, I cut the foam wheels off of the original hubs, and slipped the hubs inside of the wheels, then got them running true, and glued them in place. here are the results.
Nice

What diameter and what did they end up weighing?

I tried making 'tundra' wheels for my Champ out of the Dubro "lite" tires. ( Same minicell foam I used for fitting my SOF kayak cockpit.)
Too heavy.

Used WW yogo matt foam and got them very close to the same weight as stock.
And the blue wheels (easily dyed black with shoe dye) make it unique when flying indoors with up to 6 other champs at the same time.

Lite wheels/tires for my Champ

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, I have finished reading the entire 1265 page Champ review thread, and this Mod thread.
Lots of amazing creativity, skills and ideas freely shared here....THANK-YOU !

There have been many posts i wanted to add to, but they were often many months or years old.
I will spread out my thoughts to keep each on topic and easier to follow.
(where to start ???...soo many tires/wheel ideas.... )

The plan for my Champ is to keep all mods within the intent to, "Simplify and add Lightness", from my previous RC Sailplane experiences in the 80's.

When I got my Champ, also purchased the Dubro 1-1/4" Mini Lite wheels. described as 1.10gr. each.
I use an AWS GEMINI-20 Portable MilliGram Scale, 20 by 0.001 G, that I have proven consistantly accurate
to 0.02 grains (not grams), or 0.0013grams (13 ten thousandths)

The two stock Champ tires/wheels weighed 0.974grams, or avg .487g each.
Two Dubro Mini Lites tires/wheels weighed 2.936grams, or avg 1.468g each.
Thats nearly 2 grams additional weight. Not what i was looking for.
Tried to thin/shave the dubro's and even drilled holes, (mag style) to lighten.
Finally got one Dubro down to 1.086g, so 2 would then still be 1+ gram added to the Champ.

Started playing with other foams around the shop...and settled on the Walmart exercise mat.
Blue, 7/16" thick, blank, no wheel, unshaped 1.5" tire = 0.433gr.
When shaped and mounted on the stock yellow wheels, both tires/wheels = 1.038 grams...
Only 0.063 grams heavier than stock

Method of build.... cut 1.5" circle out of mat with scissors.
Drilled 1/8" hole for wheel to pop into.
Shaped with Dremel sanding drum and sandpaper.

I could dye them black with some leather dye, but I fly with Allelecrik, where we often have 3-5+ Champs
flying at one time, and keeping track of your own plane is critical. So the blue tires are part of my unique ID in the air.
(kinda wierd in a fun way, to need colored streamers, like the old colored frequency clips, to fly ).

Pics....my Champ is a bit rough looking...my skin oils seem to attack the paint.
Champ currently grounded for failed servo.

1.5 inches, and they are about 0.7 grams each. The stock wheels come in at about 0.5 grams, so thats a weight gain i can deal with. I flew them yesterday and it just floats over the rough stuff with them being so wide. (3/4 of an inch)

Well, for me it was only a weight gain of 0.2 ~ 0.3 grams on each wheel, that's something I can deal with for the increase in the fun factor and the awesome looks.

Minicell seems to come in all different densities, and the dubro ones seem to be much more dense than the foam that I have, they are much harder, and they have that big plastic hub in the center. I'm not sure that the dubro wheels are the same kind of foam. The minicell has a certain glossiness to it.. if that makes any sense, and the foam on the dubro wheels just doesn't have the same look/feel, that could be due to the different density though.

IMHO, this is not normal. Sounds like the servos are binding somewhere. My Champ never "buzzed/ Buzzes."

depends on what you consider "buzzing" all of my linear servos past and present buzzed to one degree or another....

Yeah, I was just wondering what his turned out to be so I could figure out what type of foam that is he has. My Champ's bushwheels were made from the Du-Bro's (all on my blog)... I don't consider them too heavy for what they are (1-3/4" and 2") and that weight slung down low like that is what makes my Champ fly nice and scale like it's on rails in calmer air... my "poor man's AS3x"

But I used the Great Planes tires this time for my Sport Cub S, Their EVA foam is slightly lighter... my RCG buddy, Ben, makes and sells sets of bushwheels for the UMX Carbon Cub from them for people... the 1-3/4" are about 1.8g each after removing them from their stock plastic hubs...

Hm, all of my micros have a "buzzing" sound, it's not a bad binding sound, just a light buzzing.
