Put a bigger motor on it!

Very cool. Will you be flying it at Fairview, or are you only flying at Prado with the runway? Last time I was at Fairview, 2 weeks ago, there were blotches of grass scattered along the landing area. Do you know if they cut it down since then?

If you need any special electronics for your plane, perhaps a fail-safe for the drag chute or something like that, let me know and I'll see what I can come up with. I think it would be good to have some sort of fail-safe that requires you to toggle the switch 2-3 times in a given short period of time to deploy the chute, so you don't do it inadvertently in the air. You can even require the landing gear to be down in order to be able to deploy the chute. I could do this pretty easily... once I find some free time. I ordered a ton of extra electronic components, servo pins, and micro controllers when I built my Corsair's landing gear fail-safe. I have nothing left to do with the components now. They are just sitting around, and out in the garage since I had to "babyproof" the house, lol

Thanks Jonathan for the offer I will look into it.

As it is, I already have a few switches (gear, flaps) and only so many hands ...

I think the chute could go, like brakes on some edfs & turbines, via mixing on the elevator channel (full elevator down = brakes on).

For now it will fly at Prado till I can see how slow it can land ... I think one should be able to fly it pretty slow (see eg the Airworld MiG-21 turbine videos on youtube) - but these things take time and there's no point in rushing and risk a vicious tipstall ....

Yes those nice grass blotches on the side of the "runway" are still there, so better keep an eye on that white centerline Other than that it's pretty nice/green - and a lot closer to my house ...

Nice jet. I'm designing (soon to be built) a 30% A-37, and this will help me a lot for reference! Good landing too dude

... it flew very well with twin gyros on the ailerons and rudder

Now I need more packs ...

Which gyros did you end up going with?

Jonathan, these :

I've had them for years and they are, in spite of the price, very rugged and dependable.

I also had three more small ones of a different brand

that are adjustable rate (via transm) and w. heading lock that can be turned on or off, and did not like those at all !! ... they seemed overly crazy twichy.

I also bought four of these and these seem to work just as well as the MPG-6's, perhaps slightly nicer (servo centering light):

On the jets I actually prefer the ones were the gain is adjusted on the ground, less chance of some major f*up taking off eg with wrong rate ... In the MiG-21 I started on a fairly low rate (40% gain or so).

I have now one installed in my 50-sized NP Spitfire (rudder) that has a bit of a groundhandling problem (but surprisingly only on asphalt runways ).

This old Fuzzy German-made (ACT or Icarus?) fancy one for now I am saving for something else :

Cool, glad I'm not the only one flying gyros on my airplanes at Fairview any more. It's been a while since I've flown though... probably since last time you saw me. I've been working a bunch of hours each week since then on a really cool RC project that I'll tell you about offline when I see you next.

Got any new videos of the Mig-21? Any onboard videos?

Oh I flew the A-4 with the above gyro six years ago ... but I did not find it that useful - until lately when they started to become vey inexpensive ... Fumbling with the gain adjustment knob on a fast jet was not to my liking.

Did you play around lately with heading lock gyros in an airplane ... there's a bit of a thread on RCU but I can't tell if they found it useful or not (on the rudder channel for takeoff) ... to me it seems a bit risky.

Took a few pictures of the real one last week at the Air and Space Museum in le Burguet outside Paris.

The real MiG-21 looks quite a bit smaller than I expected, half the size of a Rafale or Mirage 4000.

The one below is acutally an earlier model, I think it's an F-13 (Fishbed C, built under licence in Czechoslovakia) and not a Fishbed J/MF.

Judging by the canopy and the very low ridge behind it and also the narrow air intake, it is one of the earliest modes.

Yes you are right, it's the other way around

I was surprised at how small the MiG-21 was say compared to the Rafale A and the Mirage 4000, which are real monsters.

Hi, Thanks !

The scale is close to 1:8, so the model wingspan is ca. 89cm and the length ca. 2m.

I believe these are the same plans , for Kress RK-740 fan (4'' or 100mm diam) :

There it lists the wingspan & length at 35'' and 88''.

I wonder if this fan would fly a JHH F-86. What do you think?
