I decided to finish up, connect and attach the wings and stabs before finishing the top and bottom planking ... easier to work with and way too many wires and airlines to route.

Also, this allowed me a cleaner (sturdier) nosegear install

I checked the static fan rotor balance one more time on my $3 magnetic balancer, and then went ahead and installed the fan (semi-permanently) in the MiG-21 fuse ...

Once the Springair retracts were installed and tested, she was ready for one more picture:

Fiberglassing ...

I use 48g (3/4 oz) lightweight glass cloth for the front half of the fuse, and 18g ultralight weight cloth for the tail part. I got this excellent cloth from HC.

I apply the Z-Poxy laminating (finishing) resin with a disposable brush. I don't like spreading resin with a credit card like you are applying peanut butter ...

I heavily dilute the resin with propyl alcohol to save weight, undiluted resin adds a ton of weight and serves no purpose. The alcohol evaporates within a matter of minutes.

I fill the weave with krylon primer, which is a lot lighter and easier to sand than laminating resin (which is shell hard).

I closed the hinge gap on all surfaces, to give a cleaner wing profile, and prevent flutter. I made the covers out of cheap drafting mylar.

The various linkages still need to be adjusted for travel (ie hole choice to give max mechanical advantage & least epa reduction).

I also made a foam plug for the fibegrlass linkage covers.

The MiG-21 "bottom work" is almost finished.

Tested the Springair retracts & steering, installed the tail sub-fin, cut out the cavernous wheel well openings, & touched up the paint a bit.

The top hatch is long enough to allow plenty of batteries to slide in there.

Unfortunately the batts have to go all the way forward, and into the cockpit area, to get the CoG right. Very cramped in there ...

The nose shock cone is, for now, removable.
