Quick Stick, EPP Sport flyer, **PLANS**, Video

Outdoor season is on my mind now, so Ive been thinking about outdoor planes. One plane I thought was a pretty good sport flyer and windy day flyer is the Mini Ultra Stick. I decided to build something similar but out of EPP. The result is the "Quick Stick".

I really enjoy slow and close flying so the Quick Stick has some design features I'm hoping will make it behave nicely at the low end, especially the large control surfaces. I also lined up the thrust line and the wing and stab center lines as on a 3D plane. With the full airfoil wing and the full fuse I hope it has reasonably good high speed too.

From the photos below you can see I've kinda played with some canopy designs for different looks. I think I like the racer look the best.

I should be able to maiden this plane this evening.

PLANS provided by motorhead

Guts:

motor Tower Pro 2409-18T

or for more speed but runs hotter/draws more amps;

Towerpro 2409-12T

esc HKSS30

4 servos HXT900

Battery Rhino 3s 1050 mAh 20c

Connector for battery XT60

Connectors for motor/esc 3.5mm bullet

I like this a lot. Looks like a fun plane. How did you get your LE sanded down so nice? Is that 1.3 or 1.9lb epp? I bet it's 1.9, because I can get the 1.3 to look that nice. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Did you taper your elevons also?

I favor the racer most. Canopies look cool way back.

I like the racer canopy. I already have two planes in line to build, so it looks like I may have a third.
Thanks Leadfeather

Daddy-O, The wing was hot wire cut by a flying buddy who has a cnc hot wire cutter. The entire plane is made from 1.3# epp. Except for the wing, the rest of the plane; including the canopies; came easily from a single 18" x 36" sheet of 9mm epp.

cmelton11, If the Quick Stick proves worthy there will be plans.

The forecast looks good for flying this evening!

Midwest's Cellfoam is a polystyrene (Styrofoam) type product. It is in the same family as Depron and Buecor and Protection Board and Dow Pink foam.

EPP is much more durable, but more flexible than the polystyrene foams. Reinforced correctly, epp makes a pretty good airframe that can take a lot of abuse.

Worthy? From lead? But of course! We'll just wait patiently for the plans.

maiden flight and crash

The good: The Quick Stick flew very well. Good speed range and very good control, just what I was hoping for.

The bad: The elevator servo arm came off. I was about 40 or 50 feet up. I had just gone to full throttle and it nosed over and dove in really hard. It happened so quickly I barely pulled off the throttle before it hit.

The good: In spite of the hard "nose in", there wasn't a lot of damage. The epp near the nose cracked and the landing gear popped off. It is already fixed and ready to fly again. I think a balsa or Depron plane would have had extensive damage.

Here is a video of the maiden flight including the "pile driver" crash landing.

Update: Flew the Quick Stick this AM. Conditions weren't so nice but it flew like a champ.

Time for some paint.
