Build Log

New DLG project: One-piece, oval fuse, Edge-foiled - show AND tell!

I'd like to share with you the build of my new DLG.

It will have:

- a one-piece fuselage with oval cross section
- a bagged wing,
- Gerald's Edge-foils, 4P planform

If there's interest, I'll try to show you a relatively easy way how to make oval fuselages and bagging a wing in one piece.

Always interest in learning Jonas...

Looks good. What are you using to model, Catia?

OK, people, here we go:

I made the design in Rhino (same as you, Tom).

I made me some templates for the fusepod, top and side view.

Glued some layers of MDF together and cut them to shape.

It's actually the first time I use MDF to make the plug. So far I'm really happy with it.

Rounding off the edges.

Now for the oval boom. Unfortunately I haven't taken any pictures of the process, so I made some renderings in Rhino.

First of all I took a standard round boom. I used one of my first test booms.

Then I cut me two tapered pieces of 2 mm balsa. If the round tailboom has let's say 16 mm outer diameter and the oval should be 21 mm in width, I had to cut a triangular piece of balsa with 2.5 mm on the big end an zero at the rear.

These long thin balsa strips are then glued to the sides of the boom.

They provide a guidance for sanding the bondo to shape.

The bondo is put in the corners between boom and the balsa.

Next comes what we all love most on our hobby: sanding, sanding, sanding...

Is the oval boom a plug, or simply a very heavy oval boom?

It's part of the plug.

I attached it to the roughly shaped MDF plug.

Now I can sand the MDF to the final shape.

When done, I brushed thin epoxy on the plug, just the front part and the balsa strips on the boom.

After curing I sanded the plug in stages up to 600 grit.

Very cool and keep the pics coming. I was wondering if the horizontal tail will be elevated above the fuse or lay flat on top of it? I really like the looks of the fuse

Jeff, it just looks like it lays flat on the boom. I'll use a v-mount with a full flying stab. I just didn't know how I'll do it exactly so I didn't draw it in Rhino.

Glad you like the pod.

Btw: is it OK for everyone if I stick with metric units?

Please do use metric units Jonas. I was just about to complete my conversion to metric when I finished the CNC and ONE piece of CAM software doesn't support metric!?!?!

Nothing sucks more than converting drawings and machine code back and forth from mm to inches to mm to inches to mm........ AAAARGH!
