Careful if your using the HK ESCs. They are well known to have issues programming on high voltage. Even though you are going to use 4s, or 5s, or w.e, do the programming either with 3s or using 8AA cells. I use one of those transmitter battery packs to do the programming on all my HK ESCs. Any higher voltage than that, and the ESCs get insanely hot during programming and they will fry REALLY quick.
As for the way it sounded, it really depends on what you mean by didn't sound good. Describe what it sounded like. Although, keep in mind you shouldn't be spinning to motor to full throttle without a prop on, it will start skipping as if the timing is off. So that might be the issue you are describing.
