I just started on a 1/4 scale bipe project. For power, I have a Monster Power 160 and a Hobbywing 70A HV. I will use a 12S setup. I have multiple 6S 3000 and 6S 5000 batteries from my heli so that's why I chose that setup. I may be under spec'd on the ESC but I don't think I'll pull a full 2700W from that motor with that plane. Probably closer to 2000W. The bipes need alot of nose weight so getting a big motor does not hurt. $150 for a large scale power plant is KEWL! I already have the bats so it was a no brainer.

12 cell may be a bit to much for the monster power 160. I think 10 cell is it's limit.

Hey, anyone who has a monster power motor and has not posted the Prop, motor, RPM Wattage, currrent and Battery they used, Please do so and we can catalog all this. Even if your a lurker, go ahead and post. I'll dig up or measure what I have got. Go ahead and comment anything of useful information on your MP motor in that post.

My Monster Power 32 is going to go into a Cub this week. I made a test stand last night that will fit I believe all of my X mounts I use.
I just bench tested my Monster Power 32 on a 3S and 4S battery. 13x8 APCe prop is what I had tried at first. 6400RPM and 320W max on 3S 7700RPM and 620W max on 4S 12x10 Wood prop was next 8400RPM and 520W max on 4S These wattage/RPM values are on a fresh pack at about 90%charged (resting voltage around 4.0V) This is pretty well in line (as one could expect) with the motor calc program I use: http://adamone.rchomepage.com/calc_motor.htm I chose an Eflite 32, then set the motor to custom and changed the Kv to what I measured as 705Kv. I have a laser tach and tach the motor w/o a prop to get the true Kv. I then set the battery to the Internal resistance I measured on my iCharger 106B+. Next Set the resting cell voltage to 4V (About what you get after the first 30-60 seconds of run up). Don't forget that your resting battery voltage will drop to around 3.75 at the end so I like some power in reserve |

I bench tested a Monster Power 46.
I used a Gens Ace 5S 25C 3300mAh battery. Internal resistance on the battery was very low at averaging 2 milliohms per cell. Here are the results for the props I had on hand MP46 Kv test 12.26V 8320RPM measured 680KV using 3S 5S Gens Ace 2mOhm per cell 10x7 APCe 20.6V 12000RPM 36A 19.7V under load 710W 5S Gens Ace 2mOhm per cell 11x7 APCe 20.5V 11500RPM 38A 19.3V under load 731W 5S Gens Ace 2mOhm per cell 11x8.5 APCe 19.95V 10600RPM 55A 18.5V under load 1017W 5S Gens Ace 2mOhm per cell 10x10 APCe 19.7V 10700RPM 47A 18.6V under load 874W The 10x7 was pulling pretty close to what a Nitro .46 would pull for RPMS but this is with a freshbattery that has a really low Internal Resistance. Other packs, I think would be better with a larger diameter or larger pitch prop. Note that if you use a flightmax, blue lipo or similar more budget batteries, the voltage drop under load will be more than the Gens Ace and thus your RPM, current and wattage draws will be less. Since this motor is 800W/40A continuous and about 1100W/55A burst, that 11x8.5 prop would be for short 10-15 second bursts. |

They must have replaced the monster power with a new brand name or something. I now see 2 different kinds in the new parts section.

I have a Monster Power 15 in an E-Flite Stearman (in place of the recommended E-Flite Power 15). Has 7 or 8 flights on it, works like a charm so far. It is actually over powered, I have to throttle back to 1/2 throttle for it to fly like a real Stearman.

I was flying my old Robinhood 80 (13pounds) on a Monster Power 160 on 6s. Yes 6s with a APC-E 20x15 prop in order to use a cheap non HV esc. Batteries are two Turnigy 6s 3000mah 20c ($29 each) in parallel for 6000mah.
Great scale like and sport like flying for dirt cheap! Believe it or not, the 160 is a great motor with that combination of cells and prop. If you have a 10 pound or less airplane with the prop clearance it would be even more fun. I have since put a 26cc gasser on the airplane. I am going to try the monster power 60 on my 1/4 scale RV-4 from Great Planes it is almost equivalent to the Rimfire 1.20 that is suggested for that airplane. It is also less than half the price of the rimfire. Here is a video that gave me the idea of using the motor in that configuration. I corresponded with the guy to make sure I wasn't reading incorrectly.......... MP 160, 6s, 20x15 prop. This is listed in the comments on the YT page. This model weighs 14lbs, has 83" wingspan. Flying with an Exceed R/C Monster Power 160, on 6s5000mah. Turning a 20x15 APC electric prop, at about 4400rpm. Putting out just under 1000watts(about 978watts) Can get about 7-8 min flight time.

I just found this thread. I have a MP 60 in a Low wing trainer, 6s 16X prop and it is my glider tug. It lefts gliders up like they are nothing.
I have a MP 46 in a Giles 202 50 sized, 5s 13.5X6.5 prop. Flies great. Here is the online calc I used. http://www.s4a.ch/eflight/motorcalc_e.htm Pretty close to what I am getting. The only part that is off is the flight times. I get about double the flight time compared to what they list. Buzz. |

Harry, I have a 16X8 on it. It pulls less then 60 amps, WAY less. If I remember right, the watt meter said 49 amps. The calc program says 44.6. If you have 90 amps, DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!! Something is not right.
The calc program says if you are running a 18X8, you would be at 59 amps. I know this is working because my Brother in laws both have the same motor, same prop and they have around 50 amps. One is a little higher, he is using a single 30C 5000mah battery. My other brother in law is using (2) 3s 5000mah batteries and I am using (4) 3s 2650's 2p-2s. Now, if they pulled 90 amps the 60 amp ESC would have melted. Playing around with the calc program, I had to go up to 10s to get 90 amps. Is your watt meter reading correctly? Buzz. |

Buzz, thanks for reply. I am getting the info from my Castle Creations Ice 100 esc. I downloaded the info and was shocked.. I have not flown with this partlcular motor and the magnets seem very weak. I am using a MP60 on another plane with 15x8 on 6S and think it pulls 60 amps at WOT. I ordered another 60 and that one had loose magnets - sent it back and the second one ran for 30 seconds at 1/2 throttle and seized I am having some bad luck with these motors. I am sending this one back next week. I would really love to use a 18x on the plane for this as it is exactly scale (biplane)
