Is your Rustler 2WD or 4? I don't know if the motor being out back is better or if having a full body in a 4X4 is more protection.

2wd they are. I had a Slash 4x4 and chassis would fill up with sand, finding its way all around and in motor pinion area. Tried a chassis shell but there was too much heat being generated.
Motor hanging off back seems to stay clear better. Problem I have running in sand is the heavy load cooking 60a ESCs. Need to source an 80a I guess. Gears I switched to M1 pitch (if I remember correctly). 48p gets chewed up by sand. |

On my Slashes, I built up styrene sheet inner "walls" to keep dirt from being flung up inside which is common with fendered trucks. They also make nylon bags specifically for these trucks to protect the inside.
The best thing you can do is also go brushless. If you don't want to get the $$$ Traxxas Velineon, a great alternative HH sells is the Onyx BL system for like $80....half the price of Velineon. But get the 4000kv...the 3000kv is too "slow" unless you run on 3s or gear up a little. Those 12T brushed cans are only good for crawlers IMO. Otherwise, they always burned out on me after a few runs. |

I run brushless only in the buggies. 3900kv maximum, prefer lower. 3s battery.
Crawlers are fun too, less breakage and maintenance

Crawlers are great when you just want to kick back! Sometimes I tense up too much running the other stuff...
it's great to have a truck/plane for every occasion or mood. |

I have the HobbyWing 1060 on two of my vehicles. On one, with a stock 540 brushed motor, it seems to be adequate. On the other, with a stock 550 brushed motor, the 1060 seemed to have taken away a good 25% of the power. They both came with the standard WLToys crappy all-in-one (ESC, servo driver, receiver). The cheap ESC handled the extra power/ speed of the 550 motor and the 550 was quite a bit faster than the 540. When I switched to the HobbyWing 1060, the slower speed was quite obvious. The 1060 is not programmable. It is what it is. It's a cheap vehicle to begin with, so, I'm not going to waste a lot of money trying ESC's until I get back to what the cheap ESC gave me. |

Bandit and 2wd Rustler can be tricky to drive. Front ends have lead fishing weights glued on to help keep nose down. Paddle tires spray roost all over, smacking us in the shins on passes.
Looking at a couple of 120a ESCs https://www.ebay.com/itm/15399001736....c101195.m1851 https://www.ebay.com/itm/28406088550....c101195.m1851 |

My Bandit on Velineon 3500 on 2s is a bat out of hell. I also had to add steel weights to the front to help keep the nose pinned down.
For street I highly suggest Anaconda street tires!! Mine handles like an Indy car on the street and nearly impossible to flip. Also if you don't have a wheelie bar...get one. |

I have Anaconda wheels and tires on one of my buggies because they came on it when I bought it used. They don't seem as if they wear very well. At the price, ....
If I had to choose between a HobbyWing ESC and a Surpass, for the same price, I'd go HobbyWing. The trick woth buying just about anything on Ebay is to find the REAL deal! I got robbed buying what I thought was a genuine HobbyWing 1060 brushed ESC and it burned up in 20 seconds! It needs to have the proper labeling on the ESC, needs to come with an instruction booklet, needs to come with decals and needs to have the proper heat sink on the top. If the ones out there aren't clones, they could be genuine HobbyWing rejects. To be on the safe side, buy one from an on-line dealer - AMAIN, RC Planet, etc. |

Thank you fellas, will source from Amain so I get the real thing. I really like Amain Hobbies and their super saver shipping for single item orders.
I had 2.8 size tires on the Rustler and it handled the rutted beach much better, but wheelied more due to added leverage. |

I wanted to order something from AMAIN once. I checked and their inventory said they had it only to get a notice from them saying it was out of stock. I then switched the order to RC Planet without issue. I just got a notice saying they are merging.
