Fly-In

WATTS over Owatonna -- MN July 30th-Aug 1st 2010

WATTS over Owatonna
July 30th - Aug 1st 2010
AMA Sanction #10-0863

http://www.smmac.com/WATTS

The date is set and the AMA Sanction is done so now it's time to get some pilots on board. We're hosting an E-Flyin at the SMMAC field on the western side of Owatonna MN. We've got one of the best fields in Minnesota so come have some fun.

The fly in will run from 4pm Friday afternoon to 4pm Sunday. There is a $10 landing fee for pilots. Spectators are free. Camping onsite is free. There will be consessions on sat. We have limited RV hookups for power so contact us ahead of time if you plan on bringing a large camper. There is plenty of parking and a playground for the kids so make it a weekend out for everyone.

We have over 700 feet of "paved" runway and over double that in smooth grass. AC and DC power is available along the pits area. It's recommended that you bring your own power supply to run of the AC power though.

We also have some onsite overnight storage for larger planes that are not stored easily so bring the big and fancy planes down.

We're looking to have some fun side events like night flying and combat. If you have an idea share it with us and we'll see what people want to do. Bottom line for this event is for the pilots to have fun.

Question for you guys. We do T-shirts for our warbird event. We had an events planning meeting yesterday and I was asked if we'd want some T-shirts done for this event too. It would be an optional purchase for people and they would be around $12-$15.

Let me know what you think.

Have you decided on the events yet? Like the combat and warbird launch?

I'll try to answer a few questions here.

Combat will depend on how much interest there is in full contact combat. I'd love it but no everyone fells like sacrificing a plane to the idea.

Mass warbird launch. We'll be looking at Parkzone, GWS, Alfa type planes for the most part. I just don't want to see a 1/5 scale plane chewing up the air and possibly planes during this. 2.4 radios will help out greatly with this and having decent communication and some spotters will be a must. I've done this with 1/4 scale WWI birds and 33 planes total. It's crazy but can be done.

Yes you can send in payment with the application. I updated it to show who to make the payment to.

I'm still investigating the T-shirt idea. If we can tag it on to the Warbird event order then it might be cost effective. I would just hate to order 50 t-shirts and only sell 10 of them.

I'm going to get out to the field now that it's dried up and get some measurements done so I can draw up a map of the field so people know where to park and camp. Keep an eye on the forums here and the website for updates.

Finally please spread the word. This will be a great event and I can't wait for the fly in season to really get into full swing around here.

Looks like my kind of event! Especially like the camp at the field idea and it's a heck of a lot closer than SEFF in Georgia and NEAT in New York (have attended both).

Will do my part to get the word out in our area. Have several "combat" pilots flying Foaminators that need feeding.
