Dragon OSD
A quick search doesn't reveal much activity on this topic. Is anyone using the Dragon OSD at this time?

This is the DragonOSD+. It is actually about a quarter the size of the old DragonOSD+BOB4 which is about half the length of the older OSD and slightly narrower. It has a better power supply (switching and heavily filtered with reverse polarity protection) that doesn't get hot and runs down to 4.6V and way past 16V. It sports a bunch of things the old OSD doesn't including over 60 times bigger flight log with the ability to store multiple flight logs. It supports a bunch of peripherals on a I2C bus (which is not available on the old OSD), including magnetic compass, barometric altitude, true air speed, temperature, among other things. The new OSD also has audible warnings as well as an audio variometer function. Basically, just about everything is better, smaller, lighter and vastly cheaper.
At this point I've retired the older DragonOSD project and am not developing the firmware anymore. That's to help you maintain an optimal approach for landing. You basically try to keep the indicator at the center of the scope while maintaining your landing speed.

I understand what a glideslope is, but worndering how that can be done, and displayed, with the OSD. I think it will be fantastic! So it would be a virtual cone shape around the home position? Any angle you return from, you'll be on the glideslope? Ah man, bring it on! Magnetic compass too! Mmm! Nice. |

Unfortunately this is a pretty rudimentary GS. If you look at the second link I provided, you can see what looks like a green indicator (green dots on a scale). That's what it looks like. In the first video, you can spot it on the middle left side of the screen. This is a 2D-scope, not the 3D stuff you get on some of the advanced EFIS displays. I might make it 3D if I can get decent pitch/roll info into the OSD from the IMU/INS. For now, just take it as a simple guide.
You need to be on the specific slope for the indicator to show correctly. Think of your LZ and draw a line at a 1/5 tangent (about 35.5-degrees) and once you intercept the slope, the indicator will be centered and will remain centered as long as you remain on that slope all the way down to touchdown. Once again, well done Daniel. How does one connect a GPS device to this unit, or am I pointing my idea in the wrong direction?

This looks like a really nice unit Daniel. Are you going to supply the GPS sensor with the unit, that would be my preference anyway.
What does the Horizon Style setting do? |

For the introductory units, probably not. I have no money to buy a bunch of GPS units anyway.
The horizon draws a line for when the IMU is attached, or when the magnetic compass is attached. The magnetic compass from SFE contains a 3-axis accelerometer. While this does not really work well in a dynamic situation (ie. when moving or accelerating) it should work okay in more static scenarios. In the latter case, I just added it for fun. With the IMU, it should reflect the roll and pitch of the sensor/plane. Like in the following video:-
I am not happy with the performance of the earlier IMU/INS prototypes though, so I'm still working on it. Daniel |
