Help!

10mw or 500mw vtx...go legal or illegal??

Hi, as you all know 10mw is the max power for our vtx's in the UK. My GS utilises an antennatracker with an 8dBi patch antenna on the pan and tilt and a 3dBi rubber duck a few feet away. If I go with the legal 10mw option will this be enough to have some fun...or is it totally inadequate. Or should I just say what the hell and go with the 500mw option??? Decisions, decisions. What are other peoples experiences.

BTW if I go with the 10mw option would it generate less interference with my P & T servos? And could I house it at the back of the camera pod without any servo issues, as I'm aware that higher mw vtx's can create servo glitches?

Please help, any input will be greatly appreciated.

Go for the 500mW option. Yes it's illegal, but then so is pretty much everything with FPV in the UK. If you were to follow all the guidelines then you might as well just fly standard RC LOS and get your FPV fix by downloading videos from youtube and watching them through your video goggles (I highly recommend doing this by the way).

Ok, another question; what is the present record distance using 10mw? The "brochure" says it is safe to go 1.5 Km.

I would say that with antenna tracker, diversity and some high gain antennae ~14dbi you could probably get 2km+. I certainly haven't heard of people getting much further than that with 10mW.

There's a thread on here somewhere where someone was raving about getting 1.5km with 10mW and some of the sellers and manufacturers got involved with the discussion.

Thanks for the link lovegroove. 2km is fine by me so I'm going to install the 10mw tx.

LOL, I tried to convince you to go 500mW and ended up convincing you that 10mW will work fine.

Although I fly 500 mW, I flew half a mile (~1km) way outside the beam of my patch antenna and still had good signal. 10 mW will be good for at least that far with a properly aimed directional antenna.

I think with a proper setup 10mw is more the adequete for most fpv flying.

A nice patch helps too!

It illegal to advice you to do something illegal.
What range do you look for ?
With proper recieving antenna you can get a reasonable range ; the moon missions did not have a powerfull transmitter just good reciever antenna.

Maybe not the correct advice, but I'll go for the 500mW.

Not sure how quick the authorities are in the UK, but here in the Netherlands a FM Radio pirat could be in the air for a few weeks before he's taken out. That 1 hour in a week with a 500mW transmitter..... IMHO nobody is going to notice.
